Undergrad Education

For my undergrad education I am majoring in Middle Childhood Education. I am choosing to focus on math and science. I picked this area of concentration because I was always closest to my math and science teachers and want to be that person for a kid. I was initially a nutrition major but knew it wasn't the best fit for me. I want to work with kids and help new generations learn.

Clubs

One thing that will be important during my undergrad is joining clubs and organizations. One main organization I want to join is the club college mentors. This club will let me be able to engage with kids and build new connections. Another club I want to join is MAP. Map will help me learn leadership opportunities as well as find new people who have the same goals as me. Overall, these two clubs will help me get comfortable around kids and learning new leadership skills.

National Organizations

Something that I might get involved in while in undergrad is a national community service group. This will be beneficial to myself as well as the people or things that the group would be helping. The main benefit is learning new leadership skills and ways to build up a community which is important in the school district. Community service is great to put on my resume while also being a learning opportunity.

Career Counseling

One main place that I will get counseling throughout my undergrad is at the center for career counseling and success. Here I am able to get one on one help whenever is needed. They also provide career fairs and even mock interviews. This is a good hands on service that is open for all Miami students.

Student teaching

When moving into the middle of my undergrad I will start my student teaching. This process will be super important when trying to understand where I best fit in the field and really seeing the classroom in real time. While student teaching I will also be continuing to take my classes full time.

Job Shadowing

When enrolling in Miami University, I decided to major in Nutrition. Once I started taking the classes I realized it was not for me. I thought teaching would be the best career path for me but wanted to be 100% before I changed my major. So, before changing my major from Nutrition to Middle Childhood Education I shadowed a middle school teacher. I went into her classroom for two hours and watched as she ran the class. This step was super important in my career because it gave me an idea of what the inside of a classroom looks like while not being the student.

Masters Program

Next, my plan is to go back to school to get my masters program. After teaching for a few years I will need to continue my education by getting my masters degree. Some do a 5 year undergrad and get there masters at the same time as there bachelors degree. I want to start my teaching career first and go back once I have my life started.

Masters University

I do not know where I will do my masters program. If I decide to stay in the cincinnati area, I will do my masters program at Miami University. Miami's Master program is a great program and is highly looked at. If I chose to move to the Columbus area I will loos into Ohio State Universities master program. If I chose to move somewhere else I will find a program that is good and near me.

Dream Job

Once graduating with my bachelors and going back to get my masters degree I will go back to my dream job. My dream job will be to teach middle school. I think I will need to learn what school I would fit best at but overall my dream job is to be a math and science teacher for middle schoolers.

Certification

Before becoming a middle childhood education teacher there are a few important steps that need to be completed. I will first need to graduate college with my bachelors degree. Then I will need to past certification tests and get my teaching license. Finally, before getting a job I will need to pass a background check.

Starting my teaching Job

After completing college and all my certifications I will start my teaching degree. I will go through the application process and the hiring process. I will being teaching middle school math and science. My goal is to start at a smaller school district and eventually grow.

Mentors

When starting this degree it will be very important for me to have someone help me follow the correct path. I will reach out to my education teachers to see who they would recommend as mentors and maybe even have them as a mentor. These professors are great examples and can give me feedback quickly. Along with this I will go through handshake and connect with people who have similar career paths to myself.
