I think the quote relates to men and women joining the military, they take the boy or young lady out of them and bring out the man and or women in replace of what their life was before. They are now possessions of the government and stripped of their old life. In this case, willingly joining the military on their own.

I think what they mean by killing the Indian and saving the man means extracting the culture and being able to save the person religiously? Knowing that it was Europeans that used religion as a justifiable reason to create boarding schools, that’s the way I understand the phrase.

My main reactions are that I feel like killing the Indian and keeping the man means kind of getting rid of or forgetting someone’s heritage. And just making them into what the white supremacy thinks is a normal man in society.

I feel like nobody is really being killed just more there character and heritage is said to be killed.

Our initial reaction to this was one of anger. By “killing the Indian”, we believe it kinda goes with “civilizing the savage”, where they “kill“ the Indian roots and replace them with “civilization”, or Europeanization. I believe the Europeans came up with this to justify their mistreatment of Native Americans, by proclaiming that they are “saving” them.

I think this phrase shows that people back then believed the cultures of Native American people needed to be eradicated if these people were to be integrated into society. These cultures were being killed in order to “save” modern society.

The quote makes me think of the military and how they are programmed to be disconnected from themselves and still be useful to the system. There is a sense of killing a person’s individuality and connections to other people and their culture that is embedded into colonialism. The phrase seems like it would be religious based because it reminds me of “love the sinner but hate the sin” but it could also come from the government if I had to make an educated guess.

People who agreed with Richard Henry Pratt's quote, "kill the Indian in him, save the man". People who were for assimilation policies instead of removal policies would agree with this quote.
The quote means killing Native American culture and replacing it with White culture. The white man is being saved because they are in control and get to control Native Americans, their culture, and what they do with Native Americans and their children.

It’s the horror of assimilation, forcefully stripping a person’s identity until they are considered “acceptable” by the dominant society. In this case being “Indian” is thought to be evil and savage. I believe white Christians came up with the saying because it sounds like a religious belief to want to cleanse one of what they believe is evil. The person’s cultural identity is killed and what’s left of them is accepted by colonists and “saved”.
