Through this module, I've begun to live more in the present. I was struck by how much of my life I was living on autopilot, without giving much thought to what I was doing.

The past month hasn't been the best for my mental health and so the meditation activity actually brought me back and helped me realize that I needed to not bottle up emotions; I gave myself a day to release everything and started thinking about why I react the way I do.

Understanding that emotions arent magical and that there is a process allowed me to think cerebrally about my own emotions for the first time. I know realize that if I engage system 2, I often wont react emotionally and feel better about my choices.

The portions of the modules on Freud and Erikson were familiar, but the portion on Arnett was new. Young people today are faced with a completely different world from the one that our parents grew up in. The idea that those growing up in more recent times struck a chord with me as this was true in my own life. I was pressured into leaving the country for Uni because my parents weren't allowed. Though I had fun, I did not have the correct skills to set schedules and live on my own.

Youths now also have social media where others post ideal versions of their lives, making many feel "abnormal" when they are not. It was something I struggled with as well. Reading a more educated and scientific take on the matter was helpful as it was reassuring to know that my thoughts were not crazy and the things I went through were things other people went through as well.

The concepts that helped clarify how I grew up were the process of individuating, the importance of the microsystem in formulating one’s identity, and Eriksons psychological theory.

For a long time, I was conflicted as I had what I wanted to learn (psych), and what my parents expected of me (management, economics, etc.). Finding a balance between interdependence and autonomy was difficult but going through this module made me realize that it was important to go through the process to set proper boundaries.

Eriksons psychological theory helped me understand why I was always changing who I was to fit the group I was with. Eventually I was fine enough to be myself but the process of figuring out who I was involved pretending to be someone different to figure out who I really was.
