Mahatma Gandhi was an Indian anti-war activist. Mahatma was a name given to him as it mean 'Great SoulGandhi is one of the most well known advocates for non-violence. Gandhi believed in a Hindu god called Vishnu and followed Jainism. This is an ancient Indian religion that believes in peace, non-violence, fasting, meditation and vegetarianism. Gandhi was known for his peaceful and shy nature. Gandhi fought for Indian rights without violence despite being imprisoned 6 times for his acts against the South African government. Gandhi's goal was to free India of British rule and by the time Gandhi died (1948) India had become the largest democracy in the world. Gandhi like to reach his goals with small but important steps, he was also not only a political leader but a moralist. At the time of Gandhi's birth India had been under British rule for 11 years. Gandhi was not overly academic in school and wanted to became a barrister. Gandhi went to London to study law for 3 years, when returned to India he unsuccessfully tried to set up a law practice. Gandhi later found a job in a law firm in South Africa, where he would then spend the next 21 years.

What was the worldview around them at the time? What was their worldview? What did they do that was inspired by their faith?

Lots of people approached equality and human rights with anger and riots but Ghandi brought a new approach to the world with peacefully protesting for what he believed what was right. Gandhi was inspired to stand up for Indian rights because he faced an overwhelming amount of discrimination and racism in his time in South Africa, he was very alarmed about how bad Indians were getting treated. Gandhi was once on a train in first class, with a ticket he bought, but quickly got kicked off the train just because of the colour of his skin. Experiences like this inspired Gandhi to stand up for Indian independence.

The most inspiring thing about Gandhi was that he wanted to change the world but instead of using violence, as a lot of people do he used peace and love, he never once forgot that when he was fighting for what he believed in. I have realized that I have a lot of the same morals as Gandhi and although I am not in the same situation as he was in I can still use peace in fighting for what I believe in my everyday life. Gandhi inspired me and thousands of others to stick up for what they believe in and never give up no matter who doesn't agree with you. What i found the most inspiring about Mahatma Gandhi was that he did not try to be like everyone else at that time in the world which was using violence and aggression to get what they wanted and believed he chose peace and still got what he wanted without violence.

Ghandi came up with a new way of resisting British colonialism. Ghandi took a new approach to things which was with peaceful protesting, because Gandhi had been working in a law firm in South Africa for the past 21 years he was good at making a peaceful yet smart argument. When Gandhi started his non-violent protests, quickly thousands started to join and support him.

Ghandhi died in 1948 on the 30th of January, he was an activist for peace and non-violence but died tragically from a violent attack. A man named Nathuram Godse shot Ghandi 3 times, Ghandi was frail from fasting, Ghandi raised his hands in front of his face which is a Hindu way of greeting people, almost as if he was welcoming his murderer. Some say as he fell to the ground they heard him say “Ram, ram” which means “God, god”. Gandhi had to make a sacrifice because of what he believed in he was never safe because many people would disagree with his beliefs.
