My name is Meghan Reilly! I am the 6th Grade Special Education Teacher and teach Math to 8:1. I have been teaching at Syracuse STEM for 5 years. I love to read and read 10 books over the summer. My dogs are my absolute favorite.

My name is Julio Cesar Carpio. I am the 7th grade ELA Tutorial teacher at Syracuse STEM @ Blodgett Middle School. I have been teaching here for 3 years already! When not in the school setting, I like to unwind by listening to alternative rock music, watching horror movies, and playing video games.

My name is Leeza Roper and I teach 8th grade English Language Arts. I've been teaching for four years, and I am currently in graduate school for Literacy Education at Syracuse University. I am a proud CODA and love everything about Deaf culture since that is one of the cultures I was raised around.

The Diversity, Equity, and Belonging initiative is a district-initiative aimed to build, support, and sustain communities of belonging across the district. There is one DEB lead for each school, and I am your DEB Lead for Syracuse STEM at Blodgett. I look forward to create a welcoming, diverse, and inclusive environment where each student and staff feels that their whole identity is known, respected, and valued in our learning spaces.

Some more things to know about me are; I love ASL with all my heart. I am starting a ASL club during 8th grade lunch (Tues & Thurs) I also love dancing, volleyball, eating GOOOD foods, and having rich discussions. I am located in room 410A, so stop by anytime!

Deb has been working in the district for many years in various buildings. Over the summer she got to work with our now 8th graders at Oasis for Summer School. She is now co-teaching with Mrs. Riccardo in 6th grade Social Studies. Deb can be found in Room 107. At school, Mrs. Doyle is very competitive. She even took a bet from an 8th grade student about who could run down the stairs faster. Naturally she beat him and he still owes her $1.

Outside of school she enjoys rooting on the Buffalo Bills, golfing and paddle boarding. Deb loves being social and having fun. She especially loves spending time with her new grandbaby, Madelyn James.

Dia De Muertos or Day of the Dead is on November 1st and 2nd 2023! It is always the day after Halloween.

Dia De Muertos is a celebration of the ones who have passed on and is celebrated by primarily the Mexican culture. The holiday was originally a 20 day celebration but has changed to a two-day celebration. Dia de los Muertos traditions include ofrendas (altars), cemetery visits, skulls or calaveras, marigolds, traditional foods, parades and festivals.

Ways you can celebrate Day of the Dead respectfully

Here's ways to participate respectfully in Día de los Muertos traditions:

• Visit the gravesite of a loved one.

• Have a picnic at the cemetery where your ancestors are buried. You can bring foods your dead loved ones enjoyed and have a picnic with them.

• Make an ofrenda, or altar, at home. You don't have to go anywhere to remember those you love. You can set up photos, candles and food in a corner of your house.

• Attend a Day of the Dead festival.

• Make your own sugar skulls. Sugar skulls — or calaveras — are easy to make and have three simple ingredients: sugar, meringue powder and water

• Buy pan de muerto from a local Mexican bakery.

• Buy marigolds or cempasúchil.

Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, is a joyous Hindu celebration symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

During Diwali, families come together to light lamps, exchange gifts, and share festive meals. It is a time of renewal and reflection. Diwali is a reminder to all of us in the Syracuse STEM community to always seek ways to foster unity and positivity within our diverse community.

Ways to honor Diwali in our school community:

• Lantern-making workshops: Students can create colorful lanterns, which symbolizes the brightness associated with Diwali.

• Candle Lighting Ceremony: Students and staff can come together to light candles or Diyas symbolizing victory of light over darkness.

• Festive Treat Sharing: Organize a Diwali treat exchange. Students can bring in traditional snacks to share.

• Cultural Storytelling: Share stories that emphasize themes of light, goodness, and perseverance.

In 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This site, on a hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, D.C., became the focal point of reverence for America’s veterans.

To honor these men and women, symbolic of all Americans who gave their lives in all wars, an Army honor guard, the 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard), keeps day and night vigil.

A law passed in 1968 changed the national commemoration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. It soon became apparent, however, that November 11 was a date of historic significance to many Americans. Therefore, in 1978 Congress returned the observance to its traditional date.

National Ceremonies Held at Arlington National Cemetery The focal point for official, national ceremonies for Veterans Day continues to be the memorial amphitheater built around the Tomb of the Unknowns. At 11 a.m. on November 11, a combined color guard representing all military services executes “Present Arms” at the tomb. The nation’s tribute to its war dead is symbolized by the laying of a presidential wreath. The bugler plays “taps.” The rest of the ceremony takes place in the amphitheater.

This is Kayla's first year in our district. She started the year as a Math teacher! Around October she was asked to fill the 7th grade Special Education Teacher position. She gladly accepted as she is also currently going to school at Syracuse University for Special Education. She also teaches one class of Resource to 4 lovely 6th graders. Kayla can be found in Room 208 or on the 7th grade floor.

Kayla is a member of the Onondaga Nation and taught Social Studies at ONS last year. She is also creating an Indigenous Club through DEB, here at Syracuse STEM. Kayla is also Mom to 3 adorable children, two boys and one girl. Every morning she enjoys her Dunkin Donuts and is always bundled up.

Americans generally believe that their Thanksgiving is modeled on a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people.

In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in November to celebrate gratitude and unity amidst the turmoil of the Civil War.

The goal of this presentation is to get kids thinking and talking about their test scores and data. We hope that this will lead to students taking the test more seriously, paying more attention in the few classes leading up to the test, and coming to school ready to take the test.

While in D.C, they learned about monuments likes FDR and MLK, memorials like Vietnam, and our nations history. They even got to see where President Joe Biden lives and runs the country.

Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, a spiritual leader whose teachings form the basis of their religion.

The concept of Kwanzaa draws on Southern African first-fruits celebrations.

I learned a lot of interesting things about New Years!

This is Alex's first year in our district! He is our Math Tutorial teacher for 6th Grade and joined the 6th grade team around November. He can be found on the 6th grade floor, across from Ms. Nair. Mr. Petko is thrilled to help the kids see the world through the lens of mathematics. I'm a big advocate for continuous improvement and trying new challenges, because it is the best way to learn and grow.

I like to work with electronics and computers, and also I play bass guitar in a rock band. My father owns Darwin's, downtown.

We are thrilled to have Mr. Petko here at Syracuse STEM @ Blodgett.

It starts on February 1st and ends on March 1st. This is a great way to learn about it and teach our scholars.

Mr. Junco is from Cuba but have been in Syracuse since I was 4.  He went to school in the SCSD and have recently graduated from SUNY Oswego in 2023 and currently is getting his masters.
