Mahatma Gandhi (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi) was born on the 2nd of October 1869 in Porbandar, India. By the age of 13 he was wed to a girl named Kasturba Makanji through arranged marriage. He began stealing and eating meat to rebel, then his Father died. After the death of his father, the death of his first child and the birth of four more children, Gandhi, at the age of 18, travelled to London to pursue law. In the 3 years he spent there, he learned about other religions. He returned to India in 1891 but struggled to find work so in 1893 he travelled to Durban, South Africa. He was greatly discriminated against there. Then Gandhi made many trips to different places and ended up fighting for Indian Liberation before being killed by a fanatic in 1948.

Mahatma Gandhi's family was a Hindu family so he was a Hindu too. But he learnt a lot about many other religions and this helped him form his own opinion on philosophy, religion and the right way to live. Because he had many Christian and Muslim friends, Gandhi was immersed in many different religions and he also learned a lot about the Jain religion which focussed on being nonviolent.

He strongly believed in Ahimsa which is nonviolence, the value of peace and love. Also, he believed that all religions were true and that every religion should be respected.
