Thank you for contacting KESAB regarding cigarette butt litter.  I have attached a fact sheet from Keep Australia Beautiful which will assist but I will answer your two questions:
 
  • How do cigarette butts hurt the environment (and animals)?  
 
  1. Cigarette Butts are made from plastic.  When they are littered they leach chemical toxins into our waterways and this causes pollution.  
  2. Further to this it has been recorded a number of times that animals, birds in particular mistake this awful litter item for food and ingest it.  This is toxic to the bird and can kill them.


  • Do you have any solutions to fix this problem?  
 
  1. I would say the best way would be for people not to smoke cigarettes in the first place as this would stop the manufacture.  Demand = Supply and so if we remove the demand there is no supply chain for the manufacturer.  
  2. However, if people do choose to smoke cigarettes then they have a responsibility not to drop the butts into the environment.  
  3. Butt Bins do help people to do the right thing as they are provided with proper facilities to do so.
  4. Fining people for littering is another thing that might help.
