Felix, the main character, is living in an orphanage at the time of ww2. His parents are Jewish book sellers and he’s been waiting for them to come back and pick him up. He finds a carrot in his soup and thinks it’s a sign so he leaves and goes to find his parents. He goes back to his old town and house but a man called Mr Kopek says that his parents aren’t here and they’re in the city so Félix starts going to the city. While walking he sees a burning house, there’s a lot of dead chickens and he sees two dead people. He investigates the house and finds a unconscious young girl, he saves her and tries to become friends with her but she’s upset.

once is a book about a little boy called felix and he’s a jewish boy living in a orphanage but one day he found a carrot on his soup bowl at dinner and he thinks it’s a sign that his parents are alive and might be coming to get him so a couple days later he sets off to try find his parents not knowing that WW2 was happening, after a little bit of walking he finds a house with the door unlocked and no one in it but it still has a hot oven and warm food in the table he goes upstairs and decides to change his clothes and then he eat some food and leaves a note for the owners he then sets off again alone the river but on his way he saw that the water was turning red but he just thought that people were hunting rabbits and that one fell in the river he then made it to the town and found his old house but when he got inside he saw that all his books were gone and it was all clothes he then goes upstairs to where the house is and heard a male and female talking thinking it’s his parents when it wasn’t he was then chased out the house he then started walking to the city and he was walking through the field when he saw that there was a house on fire he also saw that there was dead bodies and dead chickens with holes in them thinking they’ve been shot he then sees that there’s a little girl unconscious and takes her into a field for the night for her to rest.

A boy called Felix lives in a catholic orphanage in Poland. He is Jewish, but he has to pretend to be catholic until his parents come to get him, who are book writers. He found a whole carrot in his soup and thinks it is a sign that his mum and dad are coming to get him. The next day the Nazis went to the orphanage and burned the all the Jewish books. He decides the next day that he will leave the orphanage and find his parents. He goes in to a house and finds food and eats it. He then finds clothes that are way too big for him so he adjusts them and then he hears gun shots and heads in the direction of them to find the river. When he gets to river he follows it but then it starts to turn blood red. He continues to follow the river then he makes it to his old home town but it is not as busy as he remembers and the book shop he used to live in has been turned into a clothing store.

They where asleep then when they woke up they saw hundreds of people walking by on the road and when they stood up they got shouted at by nazi soldiers to get back in line and keep walking after about 1 day or so they reached the ghetto where they got shouted at by a lot of people and when they got to a gate they saw kids getting put in trucks and adults getting shot but when the nazi tried to take Zelda, felix tried to stop them but stared throwing up and got really dizzy

In these chapters Felix started that the nazis are more than people who don’t like Jewish books and starts to realise the terror the Nazis caused: Felix was walking through lots of rain and mud on his way to the city after being found by the nazis with Zelda. On their way they saw lots of horrific stuff like a man being beat because he couldn’t walk any further and they saw lots of people being forced to dig their own mass grave in the forest, when they got to the city they went to the ghetto and the nazis started killing lots of people and seperating people from the their children. Somebody tries to take Zelda away from felix but a man named Barney managed to stop her getting taking away. Felix faints and throws up on in the city. When he wakes up he is in some form of safe place with lots of other children that Barney manages to save. But Felix is frustrated because being here makes it more difficult to find his parents he also comes to a realisation that his parents may be dead and this upsets him a lot.

Felix and Zelda are being brought to the city ghettos by the Nazis and they see a lot of other Jews and the Nazis are being abusive and are shouting at the Jews and then Felix sees people, including children and people who don’t have clothes and they are digging a massive hole which is their graves and then once they all reach the city they see people having to scrub and clean cobblestones and the Nazis start shooting at some of the people and the children are being put into trucks and then one of Nazis says that Felix and Zelda are trying to escape then one of the Nazis wants to shoot Zelda but a man stops the Nazi and then tries to take her away but Zelda stops and says that she’s not going without Felix who is throwing up and then Felix passes out and he wakes up in a room with a candle light and there are a few other children including Zelda and a man named Barney and tries to take care of Felix and he asks him if he can read one of his stories from the notebook to the other kids but Felix says no so Zelda tells a story.

He gets captured by the nazi’s and they start walking to the city and felix looks around to see that the people are sad and they seem miserable and hungry and then Zelda asks for a piggyback ride cause her feet hurt but felix couldn’t carry her all the way cause he felt ill and when they get to the city they separate adults from children

Felix and Zelda are walking trying to go the the city to find their parents, Zelda is upset but Felix is telling her story’s to try cheer her up. They rest on a haybail but Felix hears sounds of talking and cars and they walk towards the sound. It’s a group of Jewish people and a Nazi forces them towards the group, Felix thinks his parents will be there but they aren’t. Felix and Zelda have to walk to the city with the group. When they get to the city everything turns to chaos, people are scrubbing a cobblestone wall while some are getting pushed through a gate. A man try’s to disobey the Nazis but he gets shot and dies. Zelda is suddenly getting dragged away into a van by a nazi, Felix is panicking and screaming but luckily a kind man with a leather bag try’s to negotiate with the nazi. However the Nazi isn’t very happy and attacks the man. Meanwhile Felix is vomiting and is trying to communicate with the man, he then passes out. Later he wakes up in a cellar with the kind man, Zelda and a few other children, Felix is nervous about what happened to his parents.

zelda and felix got away from the solider in the field and started to walk with the big group of jewish people walking to the city felix gave zelda a piggy back there and told her storys when they are walking they see people in the woods digging a hole and the nazis are pointing guns at them.

when they get to the city the people are shouting rude things at them and calling then dirty jews. zelda and felix get to the gate and see that only adults are aloud in the gate and kids are getting taken away and put in a truck he then saw people getting shot felix is lying in the street being sick but he sees zelda getting taken away by a man zelda starts shouting that she cant go without felix the man then looks at felix vomiting on the street. felix wakes up in a strange place with a man looking down at him he puts a cloth on Felixs head to make him feel better he then sees zelda who tells him that his notebook is ok and his letters he then hears zelda asking the man whos name is barney if felix is gonna die he also hears another kid crying its a boy barney tells him hell be alright. felix goes back to sleep when he wales up later barney is asking him if he can read one of his storys to the other kids felix says no there were seven kids in total a boy who is chewing wood a boy who is blinking a girl with a bandage a girl with curly hair and a the boy who was crying. because felic wouldn't tell a story zelda was angry at him and started to read one herself.
