Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which people understand and manage their emotions, achieve goals, feel empathy for others, maintain positive relationships, and make responsible choices. These factors all contribute to a positive school climate where students can learn.

  • Create a safe and comfortable learning environment by ensuring needs are met across multiple students with unique learning styles.
  • Creating safe spaces, a cozy nook, in classrooms for students to calm down, recharge, and be alone so they are ready to learn.
  • It's difficult to learn when you're emotionally keyed up, having a space space to retreat to is necessary to retrieve new information.
  • Emphasise to students that this space is not for punishment, it's a space to transition from upset to calm.

Conditions that generate behavioral issues fall under the category of emotional disturbance. When it comes to special education, emotional disturbance is associated with mental health or severe behavior issues.

“Emotional disturbance" means a condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time and to a marked degree that adversely affects a child’s educational performance:
(1) an inability to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors;
(2) an inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers;
(3) inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances; (4) a general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression; or
(5) a tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems. The term includes schizophrenia, but shall not apply to children who are socially maladjusted, unless it is determined that they have an emotional disturbance (K.A.R. 91-40-1(v))

  • Setting individual goals for both short and long term.  Daily goals, monthly goals, and academic year goals.
  • Checking in with students on their goals and keeping them accountable.  Re-assessing goals when needed.
  • Writing lists, having discussions, setting up reward systems for students when they reach goals on their individual learning plans (IEP).

  • Through formal testing, observation in class, and interaction with student assess individual needs and accommodations to succeed in class and for the future.
  • Collaborate with fellow teachers, school counselors and parents about students' learning needs and progress in the classroom.
  • Tailor assignments to student needs.  For example, if a student needs extra time on an exam having a system and space set up for the the student to take the exam. Or student needs to have frequent breaks during the exam period, having that set in place for them.
