Throughout the novel, there is a huge debate over whether Unwinding is murder. I think that Unwinding is definitely murder for many reasons:

Reason 1: Although the person’s tissue is still alive and usable, they have no body to exist in which makes them not fully alive.

An essential part of being alive is being whole. When someone is unwound, their body is taken apart and salvaged, however the person themselves ceases to exist as a whole person: “If every part of you is alive but inside of someone else… are you truly alive" (Shusterman 167)? Since the person does not have a body or even a mind to think for themselves, this proves that unwinding is murder.

Reason 2: The person cannot live life or make any decisions for themselves after unwinding which makes them terminated despite the fact that their tissue is still viable.

Roland was not able to think or even remember who he was after his unwinding, which is an essential part of being alive: “Left occipital lobe. I… I… I… don’t remember where… Left parietal lobe. I… I… I… can’t remember my name… but.... But… Hypothalamus. I… Medulla. …" (Shusterman 293-294). During Roland's unwinding it is evident that he lost his sense of identity as his brain was severed into many different pieces, which proves that Unwinding took away his life and is murder.

In the novel Unwind by Neal Shusterman, the process of Unwinding was made legal by The Bill of life after a civil war over reproductive rights. Unwinding is the process of harvesting a child's body parts to be transplanted to different recipients. A parent can choose to have their child Unwound between the ages of 13-18.

Reason 3: The process of Unwinding matches the dictionary's definition of murder.

Murder: (noun) the premeditated killing of one human being by another.

The children have no choice in the matter which means that the action was premeditated and chosen by another person (their parents): "From the moment his parents signed those papers, Connor was alone" (Shusterman 10). Connor's parents made the decision for him to be unwound without his knowledge or approval, which proves that unwinding is a form of murder.
