There are so many reasons why netiquette is important. One of the biggest reasons is because children need to know what they're supposed to do when they are online. By educating students on netiquette you are helping them to be safer and smarter. Netiquette teaches students how they can be safe but also have fun online. When children learn netiquette they also learn proper manners and etiquette in the classroom. Netiquette teaches children respect, kindness, patience and proper communication which is vital for a child to learn at any age. The other reason why netiquette is so important is because netiquette sticks with you even when you're an adult. When children grow up and become adults and get a career, their employers will look through their social media accounts and any comments that they have written online and posts that they have made. If they have written something mean or inappropriate than their employer can choose to fire them or an interviewer can choose to not hire them. Netiquette is important for all people at any age to know.

After showing specific examples that mainly edge towards good netiquette and having the students guess if they believe that they were good or bad forms of communication, the teacher has the students make small groups of no more than 3 students. 
The next part of the lesson includes an activity where the students send a message to another group (this part assigned by the teacher) and the students try to write a message to their partner group that is inspired by good netiquette. The teacher has them write good messages to each other to inspire positive writing towards their peers. 
Also, in these groups, the students will have the choice of creating a powerpoint presentation or a powerpoint that goes along with a skit displaying the research they found and the examples that they came up with. 
After the lesson, if the teacher believes that the class feels positive towards each other she could take the messages and have them make posters with their best example to place around the classroom to remind the students of what good netiquette looks like. Another option could be that the teacher has the groups pick their best example and writes it on the board, then the teacher makes a change to the example to make it a form of bad netiquette and the students have to correct the example to make it good again.

After the video I would put the kids into groups of 3 people. I would ask them to discuss some of the important rules of netiquette that they remember from the video with the members in their group. Once they talk about those rules I would ask them to choose their favorite rule that they came up with as a group. I would hand out crayons, markers and construction paper and ask them to write that rule down on a their construction paper and draw a picture to go with it. At the end of the lesson, I would ask each group to show the class what rule was important to them and to show us what they drew to go with it. After the kids each show their work to the other students, I would have them hang them up in our classroom under a sign on the wall that says our class rules of netiquette.
This lesson assists the students in realizing the rules of netiquette and allows them to develop ideas of good netiquette that would be posted around their classroom.

I could tell by the name that it was a combination of the words internet and etiquette but that was about it. At the beginning of this project, when I was researching, I didn't think about how important netiquette is for children as a future educator. The more research I did, the more I began to have a stronger understanding of what netiquette is and the importance of it. I found so many great resources like lesson plans, informational videos, advice from current teachers and examples to help me understand better. The lesson plans were the most helpful for me, because I never realized how beneficial, teaching netiquette was, and how the rules of netiquette were actually really similar to general rules in a classroom. Some of the lesson plans that I found used netiquette as an overall lesson to teach kids how to be respectful and kind to one another, or to teach them about how to safely communicate with their classmates online. One of my favorite lesson plans actually came from a BrainPOP video which I used to watch as a kid, and I didn't even think that it still existed. It had so many creative activities on how to be safe online and how children can be digital citizens. Teaching children about topics like respect and etiquette are so important and netiquette is just as important. The idea of netiquette is so important for children to learn because classes are online now so kids have to know how to communicate and properly use the internet. I've learned so much about the importance of netiquette that I could envision myself teaching it to my own class as a future teacher someday.
       Some of the rules of netiquette are pretty similar to rules that I already knew but others were very new to me. Before researching netiquette, I never knew that writing a message in all caps is an example of bad netiquette because it seemed like common sense to me. I was surprised that something like sarcasm was considered another form of bad netiquette as well. The research that I did, made me feel more confident in some topics that I was unsure of like proofreading for example. I knew what proofreading was but I didn't realize that it could contribute to bad netiquette. I learned so much from this project beyond the good and bad examples of netiquette though. I learned that netiquette is something that will stick with you even when you are an adult with a career. I never knew that netiquette was something that interviewers and employers look at when interviewing you for a job. Much like your social media accounts, they also look at comments that you have written on someone's post and even conversations that you have had with others online. Netiquette is something that stays with you forever.
  After doing my research for this project, I felt like there were many ideas about netiquette that strengthened my point of view. Prior to my research for this project, I knew very little about netiquette so my point of view was that it was something that is only useful for people whose jobs revolve around computers. I did not realize that netiquette is important for everyone to know, so my research helped me to see how crucial netiquette is. Another thing that strengthened my point of view was that it is not just kids who don't know proper netiquette but also adults. I thought that netiquette was just taught to children because adults already know how to use the internet so they don't need help. It turns out that many adults are unaware of what netiquette is and even how to use it. This made me realize that when I am teaching my future students about netiquette that they may have to educate their parents using what I have taught them. 
 I would love to use some of the lesson plan ideas that I found on proper netiquette to teach my future students. Netiquette is such an important topic and it is crucial for children to understand and follow the rules of netiquette just as they would with their own classroom rules. Before this assignment, I knew that it was important to watch what you send while on the internet but I did not know that there was a term for it. While in elementary school I remember being taught the rules of netiquette, I was in my classroom and we has a guest speaker come in to tell us stories of good and bad netiquette. I feel the the people of my generation who are in their late teenage years and early twenties grew up with the advancement of technology that we have today so we have been taught since the beginning that we need to be careful. 
        One of the main things that I took away from this assignment was the idea that people should not display false information in comment sections or when speaking to others on the internet because as I read more about it I remembered that when working on papers and assignments in high school or here at Oneonta we were told to use reliable sources because there are websites and blogs on the internet that are created by people who do not know all of the information about the topic or are biased. Having these websites and biased opinions available results in the tendency to confuse readers because the information is likely to be false. Most of the information that I discovered while completing this research were details that I had already known because I had grown up learning how to be safe and responsible while on the internet. However, something that I did not consider was the fact that anything that a person puts on the internet stays there forever. I knew that technology was advanced in the way that deleting something does not mean that it is completely erased, but as I was reading articles and sources, each one mentioned that anything that you put on the internet can always be accessed even if deleted. 
      My original point of view for netiquette is that it is something that everyone should agree upon and follow. Through completing this assignment and this research, my point of view about netiquette has been strengthened because with the way that we are living life today and the fact that technology is going to get even more advanced, having good netiquette is something that is going to be beneficial for everyone in most aspects of life. Another point that I realized through this research is that netiquette can be taught to all ages because there are multiple different ways to get the point across. With the two lesson plans that we created, I found it easy to jump from different grade levels because even at a young age, children understand that it is important to be kind to others.
