Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1709 in Boston, Massachusetts. He grew up in a huge family and was the fifteenth child of seventeen children! When Ben was 10 years old he worked for his father, Josiah, at the family soap and candle making shop. As a child, he loved to read a lot, often teaching himself about new things. Josiah took him on long walks around Boston so he could observe men practicing their trades. Benjamin learned how to do many things during these excursions. Although he only had two years of formal schooling, he was a very smart young man.

Benjamin learned how to print newspapers and articles for people to read. He became the official printer for New Jersey. Everyone liked his writing. In addition, Benjamin invented a stove for families to use in their homes. One time, he went out in a storm with a key attached to a kite. When lightning struck the kite, he felt the electricity in his fingers. The scientist actually prayed that lightning was electricity and he was right. He also invented bifocal glasses. Bifocal glasses helped people see far away and close up without using multiple sets of glasses. In 1737 Benjamin Franklin was considered Philadelphia's best printer and publisher. As a result he was named Postmaster.

Benjamin Franklin was most famous for the "Poor Richards Almanac" which he published for 25 years. In this almanac one of his most famous quotes is "a penny saved is a penny earned." He followed this rule all his life and every year $6,000 worth of pennies are collected in his honor to help poor people. Ben worked 12 hours a day in the printing shop and still managed to teach himself foreign languages and read books on grammar, science, and math. When Benjamin died on April 17, 1790 20,000 people showed up to honor him at his funeral.

Ben was pulled out of school at the age of 10 to work for his father and make candles. At 12 years old, he was an apprentice to his older brother, James, who ran a print shop and was able to continue Benjamin's schooling a bit. He didn't get along with his brother but still had to work with him daily. James began his own newspaper, "The New England Currant" and Benjamin continued to work for him and put up with his very strict and violent behavior. James would not allow Ben to publish any of his own writing so Ben had to submit pieces of writing under a secret name, Mrs. Silence Dogood which all of the readers thoroughly enjoyed. When James found out that it was actually Benjamin writing these pieces, he eventually forced Ben out. Ben escaped his brothers cruelty by going to Philadelphia at the age of 17 to focus on himself and his career.
