Norovirus is an extremely contagious infection that is commonly spread through close contact or contaminated food/water. A person with norovirus may experience nausea, vomiting, severe stomach pain, mild fever, and muscle aches. It is not normally life-threatening, but in rare cases, it can cause severe dehydration and even death.

Norovirus infection is caused by nonenveloped, single-stranded RNA viruses of the genus Norovirus (CDC, 2014) It is a viral agent that causes gastroenteritis, more commonly known as the stomach flu. GII.4 strains remain the most common, although GII.2 and GII.17 strains have recently emerged as dominant strains in some populations.

Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, chills, headache, low-grade fever, and severe stomach cramping.
