History of Grace Church Cathedral

Grace Church Cathedral was founded in 1846 by 61 men and 1 woman. There were already 4 Episcopal Churches in Charleston at the time but the strong religious revival in the south pushed for the construction of another church that could house 600 people. Grace Church has embraced the tragedy of wars, natural disasters, economic depressions, and urban flight as a part of its history. In 1886 an earthquake nearly destroyed and was recommended it be taken down by the government. Due to persistent people wanting to repair the church it ended up being repaired. Later on, in 1911 a Hurricane came through and damaged the church once again, this damage was taken as an opportunity to improve the church. In 2011 it had 12 million dollars worth of restoration done to fix its leaning walls and cracks in the structure. Since then it Grace Church has been running smoothly. In 2015 Grace was designated as the cathedral church for the Anglican diocese and has been since. To outsiders of Grace Church Cathedral, it is viewed as a historical building due to its history with a pretty positive light due to its roots within the community.

Source: https://www.gracechurchcharleston.org/history

Grace Church Cathedral is a Gothic Revival architecture, an architectural style very commonly seen within christian churches. While this church is under 200 years old, the style of the building can be compared with much older cathedrals creating a more traditional feel to the space.

What Would Experts Say about this Space and its Sacredness?

Jonathan Z. Smith: would say that this space has been made sacred through human interaction and ritual. Since the rituals have been taking place within Grace Church Cathedral space has transformed into a sacred space.

Belden C. Lane: For a place to be sacred Lane states the space has to form a connection to the individual. For example, if someone relies on Wednesday community supper for dinner that night Grace Church could be considered a safe space and sacred to them.

Mircea Eliade: Believed that a place was only sacred to insiders of the religion. He would argue that a non- Christian passing by Grace Church Cathedral would see the space as neutral feeling no connection to the sacredness of the church, whereas if a Christian were passing by they would see this church as holy and automatically recognize it as sacred.
