This happens when both liquid and gases, particles spread out equally. Gases would move faster as they would have more energy. happens when they have thermal energy. from a close compact space as in High Concentration, to the region of low concentration

For example, the experiment using HCl and NH3, showing that Hydrochloric Acid is moving zig zag as they interfere with the air particles. Ammonia is light and less dense, letting them move forwards faster. The gases are moving and challenging eachother which will show a faint white line.

Diffusion happens in both liquid and gases this is because liquid can move around which allows diffusion to happen and gases also can as gas particles are very free and move around which allows diffusion happen as there is more space when gas moves around. Diffusion happens faster in gas then liquid as gas particles have more energy which allows it to move faster than liquids - liquids have less energy then gas.

The reason why hydrogen chloride and ammonia take os long to get to each other is because they bounce around all over the container as they interfere with the air particles and they then eventually meet. They don’t meet in the middle of the container as HCl is heavier weighing it down which makes HCl much slower then ammonia which is ligther so it moves faster so it gets closer to the cotton wool soaked in HCl. They then create a cloud closer to the HCl cloud.
