To benefit my teaching in the future, I would use this method to adapt my students with target language in the class as if it's our native language class. By doing so, I could ensure that the students can be more familiar with the target language through out the interaction, communication, and engagement with better language proficiency.

If public schools decide to use Direct method, it would impact Cambodia education system, providing both quality and challenges.

Improved communication skill: By applying direct method, the students themselves will be studying in a more active way that involve interaction between teacher and students using the target language.
Promoted practical language use: It will enhance proficiency of the target language use even faster and more fluent as the method doesn't consist any translation in native language.
Challenging for student: With no use of translation in language class could be challenging for some students who usually rely on native language structure to understand the lesson and to adapt with the method.

According to my understanding, the direct method is a useful way to teach students how to use the language they learn effectively and fluently by practicing regularly. It mainly focuses on improving speaking and listening skills. Based on the example shown in the textbook related to the experience of using the direct method, the explanation of each step is very clear and understandable for students to be more familiar with the language they are learning. Hence, this method is suitable for teaching and should be put into consideration for better explanation.

Established in England around 1900, the Direct Method or DM is a method used in language teaching and receives its name from the fact that meaning is to be conveyed directly in the target language through the use of demonstration and visual aids, with no recourse to the students’ native language. This method has one very basic rule which is no translation allowed and focuses exclusively on listening and speaking, not on grammar, reading, and writing. The ultimate goal is to help learners contemplate and communicate directly in the target language and not translate in their heads using their native language. For instance, if English learners learn to say I am happy, they can think first but only in English or just say it out loud straight away, without translating in their heads using their native language.

Grammar-Translation Method or GTM emphasizes grammar and translation between the target language and the native language. This method focuses exclusively on reading and then translating the texts from one language into another language. With GTM, learners learn through a lot of vocabulary lists and grammar rules. There is actually no focus on pronunciation or oral communication. So, learners basically can read complicated texts and then translate them after. An example of Cambodian Education system adopting GTM is that in the traditional English classes or even in some private schools nowadays, students learn English by translating English texts into Khmer. Teacher usually focuses on explaining grammar rules such as verb tenses in Khmer first before teaching students to read the texts. Students then learn to translate those texts with the help of their teacher, and they are mostly tested through written exercises. On the other hand, Direct Method or DM emphasizes contemplation and communication in the target language without relying on the learners’ native language. This method has one very basic rule which is no translation allowed and focuses exclusively on listening and speaking, and not on grammar. It’s kind of the antithesis to the Grammar-Translation Method or GTM as the method itself is quite old-fashioned and not actually effective in language learning anymore. With DM, learners also improve their pronunciation and communication since they only learn and practice directly in the target language, especially when learning in class with the teacher. So, learners basically can think and speak very well in the target language. An example of Cambodian Education system adopting DM is that in a majority of private schools or international schools or international programs in this century, English is taught using only English in the classroom, and there’s even a well-known rule created, which requires students to exclusively speak English in the classroom. To make students improve their English even more, teachers use real-life situations, interesting pictures, and especially English thinkings and conversations.

One scenario that I can think of is about teaching vocabulary and phrases related to classroom objects (books, chair, table,…). At first, the teacher should start by pointing to different objects in the class, saying their names in English (EX: “this is a pen” while holding it). The teacher can also use imperative verbs for demonstrating action using those objects, like “pass me the book” or “put your book on the table” while using simple sentences. For the class participants and class engagement, the teacher can organize a game where students must quickly perform actions based on commands given in English, such as “touch the chair" or “run to the whiteboard”. With this, students can practice their basic English, engage through physical movement and interact with each other. Although it is affective, some obstacles might occur, such as difficult to control the students while playing that game.
