I chose this gif of Sancheen Littlefeather becausw of the context behind this gif and what it means for how Native Americans are seen in public. During this gif, Sacheen was giving a speech for winning the award for best actor at the Oscars, but was met with boo’s and laughter for what she said, due to her being a Native America. Only until August of this year she was issued an apology for what she endured, 50 years after the original speech. This gif shows the struggle of being herd of within white Americans as an indigenous person, where they mostly see you as a laughing stock and dress up as you for Halloween.

Native American Social Movement Leader: Advocates For The Protection and Safety of Indigenous Women

I chose this youtube presentation by Sarah Deer, an activist advocating for change to protect and safeguard American Indian women from domestic violence, sexual abuse, human trafficking, and murder. As a female, I find these crimes are brazen, offensive, and intolerable. Yet, the statistics of these crimes against native American Indian women is at 50% of their female population which exceeds the national average of women in the U.S. who have suffered the same crimes. Moreover, American Indian women have suffered much of these crimes being exploited by non-Indians and urbanization for over 500 years. It's time for this social injustice to end for native American Indian women with the help of all Americans. Submitted by Lois Kato.

Wounded Knee was a significant place where activists rallied for justice. They pointed out how centuries of stealing land, broken treaties, and forced assimilation affected Native Americans. Unfortunately this cry for help took a turn for the worst as soldiers of the US Army slaughtered hundreds of Sioux men, women, and children. This was the final major battle of the Indian Wars.

This gif speaks to the movement created from the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women, or MMIW. Just as, historically, native women have been brutally separated from their personal bodily autonomy at the will of non-native men, kidnapped and assaulted, today, many native women in modern America are still burdened with this pain. Not just because they are women, not just because they are native, but because of the intense oppression experienced at the intersection of two marginalized identities. The roles we cast for ourselves today affect more than just our immediate interactions with people at the present time; the dehumanization of indigenous women over the course of the past four hundred years carries from family to family, from year to year, from girl to girl. Their pain and their suffering live on through the trials of their descendants. According to a 2016 research report conducted by the National Institute of Justice, 55.5% of Native American women have experienced physical violence from an intimate partner, while 48.8% have experienced stalking. Here, now, in the present, there are thousands of activists, young and old, begging to be heard by those in power. But while activists work hard to find solutions to the abundance of problems at hand, government officials continue to conduct little to no research into the growing number of missing and murdered indigenous women.
