Phonics involves matching the sounds of spoken English with individual letters or groups of letters. For example, the sound k can be spelled as c, k, ck or ch.

Teaching children to blend the sounds of letters together helps them decode unfamiliar or unknown words by sounding them out. For example, when a child is taught the sounds for the letters t, p, a and s, they can start to build up the words: “tap”, “taps”, “pat”, “pats” and “sat”.

National Literacy Trust.

Phonics and music might seem quite distinct, but they share similarities in their foundational elements and the way they involve patterns and structures.

In phonics, the focus is on understanding the relationship between sounds (phonemes) and the letters or groups of letters (graphemes) that represent those sounds in written language. It involves recognizing patterns in how letters or combinations of letters correspond to specific sounds.

Similarly, in music, there's a connection between notes, which represent specific sounds, and the symbols used to denote those notes on sheet music. This relationship between notes and their symbols is akin to the relationship between phonemes and graphemes in phonics. Just as phonics teaches the correlation between sounds and letters, music theory teaches the association between notes and their representation on a musical staff.

Moreover, both phonics and music involve the understanding and application of patterns. In phonics, learners recognize patterns in letter combinations that create certain sounds. In music, there are patterns in melodies, rhythms, and harmonies that create different musical compositions.

Additionally, both phonics and music often require practice and repetition for mastery. Learning phonics involves practicing sound-letter associations, while mastering music involves practicing scales, chords, and rhythms repeatedly to improve fluency and accuracy.

Just as phonics helps break down language barriers, teaching music through a phonics-based approach can break down barriers in musical education, making it more accessible to a wider range of learners.

Phonics in music allows for individualized learning paths. Just as phonics supports personalized learning in language education, applying similar principles in music education can accommodate different learning styles and abilities, promoting equity by catering to diverse needs.

Phonics-based music education can ensure that resources, materials, and teaching approaches are inclusive and equitable for all students, irrespective of their socio-economic background or prior exposure to music.
