Physical Changes: Various physical abilities (muscle mass, endurance, physical strength) decline as aging continues, and major body system functions start to decline as well. Additionally, the skin loses its elasticity, and as a result of this, wrinkles may start to form. During this stage, chronic illnesses are more likely to appear.

Cognitive Developments: Fortunately, cognitive abilities are still maintained during this stage. Creativity may increase during this time.

Erickson Stage: Generativity vs. Stagnation. The concerns of the people in this stage shift from worries about them, to worries for the next generation. This is a period where one wants to make significant contributions to the world, and one of self assessment and reflection upon one's goals. This brings upon a 'mid-life crisis.' If a person does not recognize their achievements or worth, they enter a period of stagnation. Self-absorption and lots of concerns about health may come about as an effect.

Care Considerations: Encourage lifestyle changes such as self care, exercise, and quitting negative habits such as smoking to minimize the effects of aging.
