In 1935 Golding took a position teaching English and philosophy at a school. Golding’s experience teaching young boys would help him with explaining relationships that children have in their groups.
In 1954, after 21 rejections, Golding published his first and most acclaimed novel, Lord of the Flies. 
Awards: the Booker Prize for Rites of Passage and the Nobel Prize in Literature. Golding was knighted in 1988. 

His works belong to the modernism movement.

1) Lord of the Flies. This is not only the name of the novel but also a mystical creature that boys fear. It is a horrific pig’s head that appeared in Symon’s hallucinations. This character is very important to the story, as he represents Satan. The devil. Ans, therefore, all the sins and vices of the human soul. 

2)The next character is Simon. That may seem unexpected as everyone can agree that Ralf and Jack would be the main characters in the story, but Simon is Golding’s favorite character. Morbid boy represents innocence, purity, and holiness. Simon is almost a prophet. He is the one who sees the Lord of the Flies. The devil tells him that the boy doesn’t fit due to his pure soul, he stands out and that’s why he will be killed. Since Simon’s accident death boys become extremely cruel and want more blood. 

3)Then there is Ralph. He represents leadership and reminds us of a classic main hero of the Mystery Island. He’s quite happy to be without adults at the beginning. Ralph is charismatic but not really smart. He is a diplomat and a natural leader. The boy believes that adults will come to rescue them, his main value is law and order. He has his own flaws, he’s a bully, not really confident, and acts before thinking. As English literature is not English literature without describing a class, Ralph represents the middle class.

4)The opposition would be the leader of the church choir and later a group of hunters Jack. He represents an upper class of England. Judging by his uniform and the fact that he is from the choir we can say that he is from an English private school. That’s why Jack believes in his superiority from the very beginning. Even though no one takes him seriously or necessarily likes him at the beginning, the boy separated from Ralph’s group and managed to create his own society. They soon become uncivilized and remind savages. He’s an aggressive dictator who doesn’t believe that someone will rescue them. That’s why he prioritises hunting over keeping the fire. 

5)Piggy is a peculiar one. He’s the underdog. He stays by Ralph’s side like Simon till the very end. He was killed by a stone. With his death boys lost the conch shell that represented the law. Piggy is from the lower class, his mother is a prostitute, he was raised by his aunt. His class is mostly represented through his flawed speech. The boy is constantly bullied because he is clumsy, fat, and not really good at socializing. Even though he constantly makes stupid mistakes, he is extremely intelligent and helps Ralph to make reasonable decisions to survive. The boy is very rational and their pair with Ralph represents English parliament. 

2) Absurdity of the world around – For many authors of this period the world after the war seemed a crazy, chaotic place. As the world, human society developed but this progress was rather scary.
3) Symbolism – the novel has a lot of symbols that have already been mentioned. Boys themselves are symbols, the Lord of the Flies, the shell. Also, before editing the novel was full of other religious symbols but they were extracted.
4)The novel is very creative, the author chooses peculiar words and interesting forms of speech. That is a very specific feature of this period as before Modernism literature was rather a craft than a creative flaw.
5)Individualism is also a feature that is presented in this novel. Ofc, we read about the group of boys, but every character is described as a single person with his own values, believes and all of them are unique.
