After the wars King John the 6th did not return to Portugal because he thought his presence in Brazil stopped any independence movements in Spanish America. People demanded the King John to come back home, so he did in 1822. He promised to uphold the constitution that they have already created. He left Pedro, his son, to rule in his place in Brazil. Using the army, George D Aviles had sent an ultimatum to Pedro, telling him to go back to Portugal and uphold the constitution. He originally agreed to it but Jose Bonifacio D convinced him to stay. He found out the Portugal was trying to take away his powers so he Declared Independence and travelled back to Rio. Which dated back to the era of the Charlemagne in the 800's. In the mid-eighteenth century two of the Holy Roman Empire's strongest and largest states, the Kingdom of Austria, and the Kingdom of Prussia. Austria was originally the most dominate German state. Prussia was the first German state to officially recognize the United States when they signed a Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1785. Austria did not recognize the United States until 1797. The main problem that the German Unification faced was a "greater" Germany vs. a "smaller" Germany. The "smaller" Germany would exclude Austria and the "greater" Germany included Austria. The first attempt to unify the German states was in 1848. Riots broke out after February 1848 the soon spread to urban areas. The second attempt to German unification was a successful one. It was led by Otto Van Bismarck, the Prime Minister of Prussia. He believed in the "smaller" Germany. German unification was achieved by the force of Prussia, and enforced by the top-down. The final act of German unification was Franco- Prussian war of 1870-71. When conflict broke out between the Revolutionary French Government and Austria in 1792, the Italian Peninsula was invaded by the French. The French once again conquered the the Italian Peninsula when Napoleon rose to power. Under Napoleon, the peninsula was divided into three parts: the northern parts which were given to the French Empire, the newly created Kingdom of Italy was ruled by Napoleon, and the Kingdom of Naples was originally ruled by Napoleons brother Joseph Bonaparte, but was passed onto Joachim Murat, his brother-in-law. Most of the Italian states were reconstituted after the downfall of Napoleon and the redistribution of territory by the Congress of Vienna in 1814-15. Although the Italian peninsula was still broken up, the idea of a united Italy stated to take place. The final push for Italian unification came in 1859. The Franco-Austrian war of 1859 began the physical process of unification in Italy. The French defeated the Austrians, and by the end of the year Lombardy was added to the holdings of Piedmont-Sardinia. In 1859-1860 the northern Italian states voted to join the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. This was a big step to unification. In 1860 Garibaldi brought together an army, to march into the southern part of the peninsula. They first were in Sicily and then moved into Naples. He ascended to the throne after the death of his mother died in 1816. In April 1821 John VI appointed his son Dom Pedro and 2 days later sailed for Lisbon. On June 3 Pedro held an assembly, and then on September 7, on the plain of Ipiranga, near the city of Sao Paulo, he proclaimed the independence of Brazil.
