His fatigue beckoned him to rest. What was he going to do? Get slashed again? It would be so easy to go limp and fade off to sleep. But the cost was to high. His friends needed him. He had to try! Electric pain sizzled through his body as he dipped hi head to his paw. Gripping tightly, he ripped off the mask. The pain was gone.” (Page 441).

At this time in the book, Cole and his friends are battling a foe who can control them if they’re not wearing their special masks. Masks  given to them by a powerful enchanter. However, Cole’s mask form has been greatly injured and he must take the mask off to survive. What makes this important is that Cole is in a lot of pain, and wants to succumb to it. But he doesn’t, he knows his friends need him and he fights through the pain. This shows that Cole and his friends are willing to fight and sacrifice,  for each other.

Cole used to be an ordinary Middle school kid, but a trip to a haunted house sends him to the Five Kingdoms. Now he must help Mira in her quest to stop the High King. It is very dangerous, and Cole witnesses many deaths. He is a dynamic character because throughout the book he is learning new things and becoming braver. He changes and adapts.

He’s been through many near-death experiences, and he must watch others die and bear the burden of trapping his friends in the Five Kingdoms. Cole’s life is very complicated, but if he can pull through, he may learn a thing or two. After all Cole’s been through, I think he would make a great counselor.
