You get it all year round nowadays, but normaly it was just produced for the time between Christmas and Lent, being a symbol for fun. 
It's like a doughnut, but wihout the hole in the middle. It's filled with marmalade (rose hips or apriciots) and if you want to be really cheaky, you offer one filled with mustard to a friend.....:)

Of course we take some alcoholic drinks with us, to fuel our mood. But don't worry, the best thing at this time of the year are the filled "krapfen". It's a sweet mixture filled with marmalade. Like a donut but without the hole in the middle. If you have the Chance to try some of these, do it!!
