My 4th grade studies alternative energy. In media, we could research windmills, water turbines, etc. online. Then, students could build one with the pattern blocks. Then, write the algorithm and exchange with a team. The other team could try to replicate their design. I have engineering design process in my curriculum, so I think this would help me cover research, that and coding.

One example is having students follow the events of the story "Going on a Bear Hunt" with Floor Robots, a paper/pencil grid, or Kidbot grid. Could adjust the lesson to any story that is age-appropriate and in which the characters have a "quest." If students select the most salient events from the story, then they would be practicing abstraction.
