1) I like the different patterns and shading in the wave abstractions because the difference in lights and darks is visually appealing to me.
2) I found it most challenging to shade the sailboats because the shading is not just in one direction, it comes in from multiple directions. I am still having trouble visualizing how light would affect the shading of three dimensional objects.
3) I achieved the most depth in the wave abstractions. I also added details in pairs: two deer, two clouds, two mountains, and two background trees. When we did peer feedback nobody was able to understand how I intended for the project to connect to duplicity (perhaps because I had not drawn the snake in the apple yet). I think that my connection isn’t as obvious as some other people's connections and so there may be viewers who don’t understand my message, but I am ok with that. My favorite part of the piece is probably the deer. When I started this class, I did not know how to shade objects to make them look three dimensional. I practiced shading in my deconstruction/reconstruction project and improved during our practices with gestural drawing. I had a bit of trouble with shading at the beginning of our portraiture unit, but I improved a lot and got better at the end. One area that I still need to work on is proportions. I got a little better at drawing proportionally from our first attempt at portraiture to our last, but I still had to use a ruler for some parts of the drawing to ensure that the proportions were correct. This has taught me that I need to practice drawing what I see and not what I know. It is instinctive for me to draw two eyes the same size on a face, but I need to focus on stepping back and noticing how things really look compared to objects surrounding them. In the future, I want to try making a pointing entirely out of oil paint. I experimented with oil paint for my duplicity project but only painted a small portion of the project in oil paint, and I would like to try and make a painting entirely out of oil pant.
