Although The story in general is dystopian because the boys fight and some die, there are alot of circumstances and the setting itself are utopian. Utopia is an ideal society, so ideal that it is hard to imagine. The fact that the boys land on an island fleeing from an atomic war is utopian.

Utopia: An example of Utopia in the story is found on page 9. “The shore was fledged with palm trees. These stood or leaned or reclined against the light and their green feathers were hundred feet up in the air”

Dystopia : page 10 “ beneath them was a bank with course grass torn everywhere by the upheavals of fallen trees, scattered with decaying coconuts and palm saplings. Behind this was the darkness of the forest proper and open space of the scar”.

The Island that the children's plane crashed was a place uninhabited by humans, but it still had the resources that a skilled human would need to survive. But from what I understand the island was gradually turning into a dystopia as soon as human have inhabitant this particular land.

It started off with the plane crash that destroyed the trees and that killed the animals on the path of the crash landing. Finally, it ended with the children spreading chaos and disorder for example, Jack and Roger burning all the trees from the previous utopian island which was inhabited by humans, thus also giving an example of how children would be uncivilized under no supervision what so ever.

At the beginning of the story it was utopia (we how man kind started) but honestly what made the word dystopia is us with the wars and conflict in the world. In the story Lord of the Flies showed exactly what life is and how everything changes because of arrogance and stupidity of humans.

The story starts by telling us that the boys crashed on an island which is shown to be a paradise untouched my man-kind. " The shore of the lagoon is lined with palm trees, which sounds all pool cabana and pink-umbrella drinks."

As the boys on the island progress from well-behaved, orderly children longing for rescue to cruel, bloodthirsty hunters who have no desire to return to civilization, they naturally lose the sense of innocence that they possessed at the beginning of the novel. The painted savages in Chapter 12 who have hunted, tortured, and killed animals and human beings are a far cry from the guileless children swimming in the lagoon in Chapter 3. Because of their actions the island slowly loses it's beauty, the green trees turn to ashes because of their fire, the soil gets soaked with blood, the island gets a permanent "scar". That's how the idea of utopia fades away into a dystopia.

The Island is described as an Utopian place at the beginning of the story. This is shown by the vague description of the island when the boys crash on it. The beautiful palm trees with their green feathers a hundred feet up in the air is an example of the description of the island itself. This portrays the image of a dream island with resorts for tourists as they see it as an Utopian island. The second the boys (humanity) arrive on the island (mother nature) they cause a scar on the island by the airplane. This is the beginning of the island descending into dystopia due to human destruction. The boys, especially Jack, created a dangerous and hostile environment, removing near to all civilness and replacing it with savageness. Jack and Ralph were striving for power, splitting the group, creating conflict. The boys became their own enemies. Another example of the island turning into dystopia is when the boys let out a fire (destruction, which the trees caught onto, creating a fuming blaze. They lost most of the wood they would've used for fire.

Utopia

Out there, perhaps a mile away, the white surf flunked on a coral reef, and beyond that the open sea was dark blue. Within the irregular arc of coral the lagoon was still as a mountain lake—blue of all shades and shadowy green and purple.

This displays the stillness of the island showing how it hasn’t been inhabited by any kind of human, presenting the fact that this is an island of dreams.

Utopia: an imaginary state where everything is perfect.
In the story there are a few instances where the author describes a setting in utopia. One of these cases is when Ralph and Piggy were swimming by the shore at the beginning. The author describes the setting as very beautiful and calming.

Dystopia: a state where everything goes bad and the environment is very unpleasant.
As well as utopia, the author also writes of dystopia. One such case is when the children kill Simon. They have strayed far from being civilized and the situation has officially become dystopian.

I believe the story portrays the island as both dystopian and utopian...In the beginning the story is clearly shown as a utopia by the description of the island and it’s clear water, palm trees and beautiful beaches... it’s also shown that by the influence of humanity and men the island is rapidly becoming more and more dystopian, this claim is proven when the plane crashes into the mountain in the beginning making a giant “scar” in it, also the boy’s actions (like lighting part of the jungle on the fire) is making the both the island and their mental health break and get disrupted.

Utopia is a place that people usually compare it to paradise because of how beautiful and perfect it is. The island on which the story took place was described as utopia in the beginning when the author describes the beautiful shore and how it was fledged with palm trees. When the kids arrived, the island represented Utopia, which represented paradise. But later on, the island represented dystopia. When the fire erupted etc. I think it gives a symbol regarding the garden of Eden. Where Adam and eve were told not to eat from a specific tree. But yet didnt listen and ate from the tree. Then got kicked from heaven.
