Sympathy is simply feeling sorry for someone. Empathy is feeling sorry for that person and actually caring about their feelings. You can show empathy by not just listening to that person and saying, "I'm sorry to hear that," but by listening and reacting by spending time with that person and helping them to come up with a solution.

Sympathy is feeling bad about what another is going through. Empathy is feeling bad and having personal experience in the same circumstances that another is suffering. Compassion is going a step further and trying to help a suffering person feel better or resolve a problem.
J. Peterson

Empathy is when you experience what another person is feeling or going through. Sympathy is when you just feel bad for another person. You can show empathy by putting your personal feelings or viewpoints aside, and try to see things from that person's point of view. A.
