Japan is expected to build 22 new coal power plants within the next 5 years.  Japan has been known as a leader in the movement to slow the rate of climate change, through creating climate efficient technologies and attempting more renewable sources of energy.  However, since the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011, Japan's nuclear policy was forced to shut down.  The Japanese government has to supplement this loss in energy production by supplementing coal power.  In preparation for the upcoming summer olympics, Japan has claimed it will use only renewable energy for the games, but this claim is severely undermined by the construction of these new coal power plants.

All around the world, the sea level is expected to rise substantially within the coming centuries.  A study from the University of Southern California on January 22, 2020 used AI and computer learning to make a prediction for the migrations of US citizens from coastal to inner continental cities.  By 2100, it expected for 13 million people to move inland.  The most popular destinations include Denver, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Houston, and Dallas.  The main reasons for these movements are the increasing potential of catastrophic flooding, extreme storms, and loss of large portions of land.

It has recently been disclosed in a journal published by New York University on January 29, 2020, that the Thwaites Glacier (also referred to as the ‘Doomsday Glacier’) is at imminent risk of melting in the near future.  Data collected around Thwaites Glacier show that the grounding zone, or part of the sheet which connects it to continental ice is melting, being ‘uppercut’ by the waters beneath it.  These waters have been getting continuously warmer in recent years.  If the grounding zone of Thwaites glacier was to melt, the oceanic portion would drift off and melt quickly in northern waters, which once entirely molten, could raise sea levels by nearly a meter.
