Transcendentalism is an American literary, political, and philosophical movement of the early nineteenth century, centered around Ralph Waldo Emerson. Other important transcendentalists were Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, Walt Whitman, and Henry Hedge.

They were critics of their contemporary society for its unthinking conformity, and urged that each person find, in Emerson's words, “an original relation to the universe." Emerson and Thoreau sought this relation in solitude.

1."...though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. " This is quite obviously a metaphor, the way i interpret it is society can be good, but nothing comes easily, and nothing is going to chance unless you put that change into motion. 2. This piece is Transcendentalist like because it falls back on the idea that all you have is yourself and in Self-Reliance Emerson uses metaphors to connect to nature.
