Boys in Athens were taught at home by their mother or a female slave until the age of 6 or 7. Then the boys would go to school until the age of 14. They learned to read, write, arithmetic, and literature. To build the boys strength coaches taught them wrestling and gymnastics. Since only boys could become citizens they didn't go to school. They stayed at home learning to nit, wash clothes, and clean.

Boys learned to read and write, but those skills were not considered as essential as military skills. At age 7 boys were sent into military camps to train to join the military. Spartan boys were taught to suffer any amount of physical pain. They did not feed them in fact they encouraged to steal food. Girls learned to read and write. Girls were given some military training so they would have experience as the Sparta´s last defense.

Athens economy depended on trade. Athens were located near the sea therefore they were able to trade with other city-states and foreign lands. About 500 B.C Athens started using coins. They found this easier to trade by using coins.

Sparta's economy relied on farming and conquest of other people. Since Spartan men lived their lives as warriors they would take land form people and force them to work for them. Sparta did not like to trade. They did not trust other people. And they did have coins instead they used iron bars.

Athens had a democracy. Athens were ruled by a council of 500. This council ran the daily business of government and suggested new laws. Each year the council of 500 would get voted by the citizens.

Sparta's government was ruled by a group of people called an oligarchy. Sparta had an assembly included 2 kings and 28 other people but the people who made the decisions were the Council of Elders. To be in the council you have to be at least 60 years old and the assembly would cheer on who they wanted to be in the Council of Elders.
