My phonics lesson focused on compound words. I wanted to include a lot of activities for students in this lesson so that is what I did. Kids will get to have a game or activities at the end of each day during my lessons. Something fun I included was compound around the world. Students will stand up in a circle. One at a time students will share a compound word using the clapping method. If a student can’t think of a word, repeats someone's word or doesn't use the clapping method they will be out. The last student standing wins.
Sierra Flores

Phonics can seem like a lot of worksheets and repetition. To break that up, I added a BINGO game in that helps students with identifying vowel teams. This will hopefully give them practice with this concept while having a little fun!

My phonics lesson focus on CVCe word pattern for 1st grade students. On of my favorite projects is a craft at the end of the unit. Students will create a "magic e" and surround it with environmental print words that they find. I like the project because it gives them practice looking and listening for the pattern and allows them to change to get creative with markers and glue!
Shayla M.

My phonics unit focused on types of syllables. I found a great 6 syllable types chart that we would fill in together throughout the week. There were two games in the unit, Don't Be Greedy, which practiced consonant -le words, and vowel team BINGO. My 6th grade daughter was lamenting about how boring phonics was in elementary school so I was thinking of her when I added these games. I think phonics can be pretty dry and feel like a lot of busy work for students. Adding a game in here or there to spice it up will be important.
-Cassie

Something fun I added to the unit is an I Spy game with words. I was hoping it would allow me to use this game to assess what they are learning with the content I am teaching.

-Crystal M

My phonics unit focused on Consonant Digraphs. I taught students about different digraphs that appear in words as well as what sounds each digraph makes and to identify and recognize words with digraphs in them. Students learned that digraphs are two letters that make one sound. There were lots of fun activities for each day of the lesson. These included videos, games, reading passages, and fun worksheets! I cannot wait to use these in the classroom!
-Saydee Willson

My phonics unit focused on compound words. I provided 5 different interactive lessons for students to understand the concept of compound words. Students will be provided with multiple lessons that focus on different learning styles, so each students will be able to best understand what compound words are. I think when this concept is being discussed, it is important for students to best understand through hands on experiences and them physically walking through a problem.
-Alexis Trujillo
