COMPARE/CONTRAST -
One effect of Hernando de Soto’s expedition that by leading the first European expedition to reach the Mississippi River, he helped increase the knowledge of the land in the US. This is like how Lewis and Clark helped increase the knowledge of the land in the US by leading an expedition west in the 1800’s. A difference between the two is that Hernando de Soto enslaved and killed the Natives he encountered, thousands of Natives died and lost their land as an effect. Lewis and Clark on the other hand sought help from and befriended the Natives. This created peace with some tribes that lasted 200 years after. Another effect of Hernando de Soto’s expedition was that by stopping to help the Cubans towns & people who got burned and stolen from by the French, the Cuban people were able to get back on their feet. This is slightly different from Lewis and Clark because they were helped by Natives a majority of the time.

Source 1 is a map of what the Spanish thought the US looked like due to Hernando de Soto’s discoveries. Source 2 is a painting of Hernando de Soto fighting Natives. This shows the point of view that the Natives don't like the Spanish because they took their land and killed them. These two are different because one is a view of what the world looked like and the other is a view of how the Natives saw Hernando de Soto.

SOURCE 1 -

LEFT:
One thing Hernando de Soto left in the Americas was the disease Smallpox. When de Soto and his crew interacted with the Natives, they passed on diseases. The Natives had never been exposed to Smallpox so they died in great numbers. This is one of the many reasons there are so few Nativies left today. Another thing Hernando de Soto left was animals like pigs & dogs. They had trained the dogs to be vicious & they intimidated the Natives. The dogs that got lost or ran off were adopted into Native tribes. Today, many dogs are part of Native culture and are used in folklore & symbolism.
TOOK:
Hernando de Soto died before he was able to go back to Spain, but the knowledge and map of the Mississippi River’s location was brought back. This has impacted today because if it hadn't been explored there would be no knowledge of it. People also wouldn't have probably explored West and our country would be very different. If we wanted to find something today, we would search it up online. It's easy as a click of a button.

One effect of colonization was that diseases brought to new places killed the Native people there. For example, Smallpox was brought from Europe to the Americas wiped out Native Americans because they weren't used to the disease. This is like the Silk Road because the Bubonic Plague brought from Asia wiped out a lot of the European population. This effect is very negative because thousands of people died. Another effect of colonization is that people were able to establish trade and use natural resources not found in their homeland. These goods included livestock, food, and technology. This is also like the Silk Road because merchants traded goods between Europe and Asia. They brought new ideas, food, and technology. This is positive because people were able to experience and make new things. One last effect of colonization is that people were able to gain new religious freedom by creating colonies. This is unlike the Silk Road because people did not find religious freedom by traveling the Silk Road. This is a positive effect because people were able to practice whatever religion they wanted.

This is similar to Hernando de Soto because he also went in search of gold and riches. One difference was that Abel Tasman did not go in search of land like Hernando de Soto did.

GLORY- He wanted to conquer Florida for the Spanish crown.

COMPARE/CONTRAST-
Abel Tasman also went on an expedition to the southern hemisphere.
