2) Dumb, unfeeling, stupid, brutish, jerks
3)He was stressed, upset, and energentic. He also seemed to be seeking affirmation.
4) He was protective for claire, he stood up for others as well. When Allison is sad, he reaches out, and tries to be nice, working on that realtionship. 
5)He is really seeking his father's approval, he need to be seen as a real man by him. He does not like the principal.
6) He hides his insecurities by building up a mean, tough wall. He hides that he feels insecure, and doesnt feel like he can think for himself.
7)He aspires to make his own descions, to develop his own path, taking control of his story. He doesnt want to end up like his father, and works against it
8)In one scence, he opens up to the group about how he hates his father for forcing the role of "the jock" onto him. That reveals a lot of his insecurites.
9) We think that learned that he doesnt like the way he acts, especially just becuase he feels like he's paying a character. Its difficult to note a change, becasue at the end of the movie, they agree to just go back to the way they were.
10) He bases his identity on how his father acts. His personal identity is he wants people to know that he is not a horrible person, and that the things he does are fro other people's pressure on him. Socailly, he hangs out with jocks, because he feels  like thats what hes supposed to do. He is drawn to the breakfast club because they also are confused about their indentities, and the way theyre supposed to act. 

Looking glass:
He must apprear very masculine, very tough, someone you shouldnt mess with. This makes him dislike himself, and he grows resentful.

2) Shopaholic, wears expensive jewellery and clothing, father drives a bmw, stylish, spoiled, stuck-up, prideful.
3) Eats an expensive and put together lunch, sushi in a bento box, immature and naive, acts mature in order to seem cool and stand out, admits that she cares too much about what others think, sophisticated and modest.
4) Rude and defensive, feels like she cannot stand up to her friends in fear of being isolated, usually faced with peer pressure, very sensitive to the words of others.
5) Claire's parents are divorced, and her mother is an alcoholic. This leads her to resent her neglectful parents. She is also spoiled by her dad and is promised a shopping spree if she attends the Saturday detention. 
6) Feels that she needs to hold herself to a high standard at all times. She is afraid to be vulnerable with her peers. Cares too much about others' opinions therefore withholds an unrealistic standard of being "perfect." She even goes as for as to say she wouldn't acknowledge the friends she made in the halls at school, as they do not share the same social status.
7) She wants to do as she pleases without the pressure and judgement from others. She also does not want to become like her parents.
8) She is soft at heart and very emotionally vulnerable. She is easily manipulated by Allison into admitting that she is a virgin and also reveals how she often goes along with whatever her friends say even if it is against her will. It is very evident that Claire is loyal to the group, when is she often standing up for Bender.
9) She is neither snobby nor materialistic when she helps Allison break out of her shell and gives Bender one of her diamond earrings, a symbol that even she doesn't have everything and that he now has a piece of her, contrary to what he said earlier 'you got everything and I got shit.'
10) Claire's behaviour with others is a reflection of her insecurities. She appears as confident and someone of high standards, but in reality she is a very insecure and naive individual. Claire often says “do you know how popular I am? I am so popular. Everybody loves me so much at this school.” Now this may be an accurate depiction of her at school, and around her peers, but at home, or even by herself Claire is not the same person. Claire is often emotionally neglected by her parents. With her father avoiding any real conversation by just buying her material items, and her mother being an alcoholic. This leads Claire to be very hard on herself and hold herself to unattainable standards which is the root of most of her self-hate and insecurity.

5. Disrespectful, not a good relationship with parents, resentment towards parents
6. abused by parents, is vulnerable with certain people, mostly covers up insecurities with his toughness, seeks attention whether that's negative or positive attention, wants love and attention but doesn't get it
7. To have attention, wanted a friend/relationship - to be cared for by someone
8.  One scene that stood out to me was the scene where they are trying to get back to the library after sneaking out, and what happened was that John told everyone to run and John started screaming to distract the teacher so that everyone else could come back without being caught. I think this showed a lot for John to do this and I think that deep down he actually cared about the other kids. He has it in him to be the nice guy, but there needs to be a lot at stake for him to show his true self.
9. We think he learned that he doesn't always need to wear his "mask" and he has also learned that he can associate himself with whomever he wants without caring about jeopardizing his social status.

Situated identity
  • He portrays himself to the tough people group and also the “bad guy”

Personal Identity
  • He isn’t able to show that he cares and is trying to build relationships, that's the person who he wants to be

Social identity
  • Maybe the cool students/criminals are the people who he is willing to hand around, people who want attention

Looking Glass Self
He might see himself as the weak person, but expresses himself as the “tough guy” and that is what others see him as 

Others might view this as cool, a bully, and he would  get the attention he wants

Since he gets what he wants as this person, he gets the attention so he continues to behave this way

He pays close attention to everyone in the group. He chooses to involve himself in their conversations and conflicts. Brian tries to help solve issues between the others and does not respond when Bender makes fun of him. He respects authority.

He’s friendly with each of his peers regardless of how they’ve acted towards him or others.

He’s insecure about his mark in shop class. He doesn’t necessarily hide it, you don't normally share your marks with others, but he was clearly ashamed of it. He’s also insecure about his friendship with the janitor. He was reserved about greeting the janitor in front of the other students.

To strive for more than academic validation. He also wants to have more freedom and not only be looked at for his grades. He doesn’t want to disappoint his parents.

The scene where they discussed how they would act if they were friendly with one another in friend groups. Claire explains how Brian wouldn’t understand the pressure her type of friends put on her. Brain then explained how pressured he felt about his mark in the shop. How he couldn’t have that mark, and his parents definitely can’t have it. He reveals he had a gun in his locker and most likely had suicidal thoughts.

  • Brian tries to put up an image in front of the others, example when he lied about sleeping with Claire because he didn’t want anyone to know he was inexperienced
  • After realizing the conceptions that other people had of him, due to his social identity, he tries to alter the way he is perceived by showing his personal identity. (making jokes, acting silly, lying about his experiences)

Looking glass self


  • Brian’s sense of sell if based on his grades, this is how he projects his image to others around him. At school his purpose and identity is about academic excellence. His interactions and relationships are based on his identity.
  • he ties his grades and academic achievements to his self worth and value, as he contemplates committing suicide after achieving a bad mark in shop.

    - She's scared to show that she's vulnerable about showing  her emotions towards other people and so she acts in a way where people would avoid her, that way people wouldn't know how she truly felt
    -Wanted to open up but as soon as the group wanted to ask more she closed up again.

    - To be more confident in herself 

    8. Discuss 1 scene involving Allison and what the scene revealed about her
    One scene that involved Allison was near the ending when she was asking both of the boys if they wanted to see her bag, when she heard that they were discussing about one another. But both of them were disinterested revolving about her, so she just dumped out her belongings anyways, this caused an argument between all 3 of them and so Allison storms out. When she was confronted by Andrew about the recent argument, she dismissed him and got angry at him when he tried to understand her. She later showed how she truly felt to him and it showed how she was overly upset. This scene revealed how Allison has always kept her problems and struggles to herself and she's never had anyone to go to for help or talk to about herself. 

    9. What did she learn about herself over the course of the movie?
    • Other people weren't that bad to hang around
    • Opening up and talking about the problems you face can make you feel better

    10. Use both symbolic interactionism and the looking glass self to help explain their behavior/interaction towards others and how they view themselves 

    • Perhaps she lies to gain the attention she didn’t get while growing up
    • She is mainly withdrawn at the start, but opens up more as the movie goes on, and the characters get to know each other
    • She is harsher towards herself than others are
    • Maybe she puts up her mask so she doesn’t have to show emotion, so she can’t be hurt
    • Views herself as unique, not able to be understood
