You can only have a car if you know you will have a place in the street to park it. Many Japanese families live in apartments that are about the size of a living room in the U.S. The japanese didn't always live in such small homes. Some families used to live extended family. This started to change in the 1950's. Many homes in Japan do not have separate bedrooms. So what they do when they go to sleep is they pull out a futon from their closets. But building skyward creates severe construction challenges in an active earthquake zone. Also the Japanese has created new land by filling shallow wetlands with dirt and rubble. Whenever people crowd into cities, pollution problems flow. A lot of people think that Japan would be clean with its daily swept streets. But Japan has faced some pretty severe pollution problems over the years. For example some toxic chemicals, such as cadmium and mercury, were dumped into oceans, lakes, and streams.
