In Tokyo the average commute for work is one hour and a half each day. The Japanese people have helped make transportation easier by adding a underground subway that links to all of the city's in Japan. Also they have a train they call the "bullet train" that can go up to 180 miles an hour. Parking is also another big thing in Tokyo. You can only have a car if you know you will have a place in the street to park it. Tokyo also has a computer controlled garage, some people who live there say they look like giant shoe cabinets.

In Japan flat land for building houses is scarce. Many Japanese families live in apartments that are about the size of a living room in the U.S. The japanese didn't always live in such small homes. Some families used to live extended family. This started to change in the 1950's. Many homes in Japan do not have separate bedrooms. So what they do when they go to sleep is they pull out a futon from their closets. The japanese also make good use of limited space by shrinking all of their appliances like there stove and refrigerators.

One way the Japanese makes more use of land is by constructing taller buildings. But building skyward creates severe construction challenges in an active earthquake zone. Also the Japanese has created new land by filling shallow wetlands with dirt and rubble. A lot of Tokyo is built on wet marshes. Filling wetlands save's farmland but at the same time it destroys wildlife habitats.

In Japan garbage is not the only waste product that builds up as population density increases. Whenever people crowd into cities, pollution problems flow. A lot of people think that Japan would be clean with its daily swept streets. But Japan has faced some pretty severe pollution problems over the years. For example some toxic chemicals, such as cadmium and mercury, were dumped into oceans, lakes, and streams. Also with a high population disease can spread faster and more car accidents can happen.
