This week we explored with paper -what paper can do?

Paper is versatile material that can used in different ways such as we can scrunch, twist, ball it, fold, unwrap, tear, rip, make a pile of torn paper and so many other ways.

In class we explored many types of paper such as white paper, newspaper, baking paper, tissue paper, catalogues and so on.Through this experience i loved the different texture of the paper .

Paper was first made in Lei-Yang, China by TS'ai Lun, a Chinese court official. In all likelihood, he mixed mulberry bark, hemp and rags with water, mashed it into pulp, pressed out the liquid and hung the thin mat to dry in the sun.One of the First paper mills was build in Spain and soon, paper was being made at mills all across Europe.

Then, with paper easier to make, paper was used for printing important books, bibles, and legal documents.(American Forest & Paper Association, 2024)

I soaked the paper in water for more than 2 hours, after soaking i could observe that paper is started to dissolve into pieces and colour of the paper is dissolving in the water. The texture of the paper becomes soggy as it absorbs to water and after 2 hours of soaking i can see paper is become pulpy where we can use this pulpy material to creative new paper .Paper is often perceived as a "materia povera",a poor or humble material, but it has hidden qualities, which are capable of posing new questions, and of helping us to distance stereotype and gain new points of view.(Reggio Children - the Secrets of Paper Atelier, n.d.)

This week we explored about the junk/loose parts in the class .As i am inquiring about the loose parts i came across this architect Simon Nicholson who developed the Theory of loose parts in 1972, Loose parts are open ended materials that can be moved, designed, redesigned, carried and transformed into ample of ways which leads them to explore naturally around their environments without any instructions.

I was inspired by Lady Allen of Hurtwood, where she has created a adventure park for the children to explore using various kinds of recycyling materials which was outdoor play where it is unstructured and children have freedom to explore freely in their environments and connect to the natural materials ,learning about the physical properties of the materials .Children are developing their imagination, problem solving skills , creative skills and overall development.(Boston Children's Museum, 2016).

History of wooden logs:

Wood served a crucial role in the societal fabric of ancient civilisations. It was the backbone of construction, providing the framework for homes and structures of all kinds. Wood also fuelled fires for warmth and cooking, a necessity in the pre-electricity era. Beyond the domestic realm, wood was instrumental in toolmaking, serving as handles for stone-tipped weapons and aiding in the creation of early farming implements. (sanforestry, 2024)

I am from India, when was a child I have seen that they use wood to make furniture, sculptures, pencils, crafting and engraving etc. Now a day’s wood waste is recycled to reprocessed into mulch, board particle and biofuel. It is linked to sustainable practices.

We have visited NGV art gallery today .I was inspired by this picture which is made of clay and used fire on the vessel's surface which created a natural colour tones as we can see in the picture.

As we are reading the Clay ecologies article,i came across this paragraph where it explained me how clay interacts with children and movements as they work with -

The responses of clay and child are never predictable, because ecologies of practice are always emergent. Movements are not intentionally performed:they emerge. Clay responds to children’s movements as they work with it.Yet, sometimes it resists and refuses to stay still in one shape. It is impossible, though, to predict these resistances. Clay flows through the studio in rhythm with the children’s movements. It demands transformation through its easy malleability and flexibility. Clay is able to slow things down in the studio. It invites the children to follow its unexpected movements as it interacts with shoes, with pockets, with canvas, with floor, with hands, with mittens, with air. (Pacini-Ketchabaw, V., Kind, S., & Kocher, L. L. M, 2024).

Does it bring up any memories for you?

It remind me about my childhood that i used to play in the next to the pond with my friends and putting it on our faces and all over the hands. We also used to walk on clay along the pond ,this experience makes me relax and calm .It reminds me of Aboriginal people put it on skin as a art and back in India we use clay as face mask for skin routine.

How does the material feel different to our past inquiries?

Rhythm of the loose parts/paper is different from clay like different texture, heavier in weight

Clay is a very different material to work with, unlike paper or junk/loose parts. What properties draw to you to the clay? Repel you from the clay?

clay is versatile materials it can be easily to moulded/makes different things out of it.It provides hand on experience which allows limitless possibilities.

I personally enjoyed engaging with clay which made me slow down and sense of connectivity to nature.

Like how they react to different lights and how can I incorporate this session into my future practice. After watching the class videos , my perspective has changed on the light and I'm looking at light in a different way . Light is used in open-ended ways, now I have a deeper understanding and ideas of how to incorporate light to children in my everyday teaching.
