The rally coach has been a useful strategy to get all students participating in pre-reading vocabulary review when there are a lot of unfamiliar words. Another swift and thorough engagement of students in post reading understanding is to Rally Coach questions related to the reading. I put the questions on the TV screen and they each answer one. The person across from them can add anything they feel is missed and their partner can ask a question for clarification.

As others have pointed out, the Kagan Structures have given a common framework from which previous cooperative learning strategies are now flourishing. My particular "go to" strategy has to be the Rally Coach. The attention to detail, the ability to catch errors earlier and the communication skills that are developed far outpace previous attempts to peer evaluate.

Band consistently uses cooperative learning in verbal and non-verbal ways. Students must work with one another musically to create balance across the ensemble. Students work together planning sectional rehearsals, give feedback and encourage each other to attain mastery. In order to attain a successful performance, it is critical that students watch the student cunductor, move together, apply previous information performing their part in relationship to the other members of the group. Further, at contests, students utilize cooperative strategies with members of other ensembles by encouraging and having discussions about each others performances.
