The Black Death most likely spread from fleas on black rats that travelled on merchant ships from country to country. The plague began around the area of China over 2000 years ago and spread globally. It travelled through the Mediterranean and into Europe Europe in 1348 on trade ships, it then spread and destroys 30%-60% of Europe's population. In total, the plague decreased the world population from around 450 million down to 350–375 million in the 14th century.

In Italy the people created a new way of preventing the black death, quarantine. This was first used in Venice to stop the spread of the Black Death which had consumed most of the country, any boats coming into Venice had to stay away for forty days and forty nights. In the beginning of the Black Death in Europe people took care of the sick but as the Black Death killed more people they started leaving the sick to die and running away. Some of the treatments that were used were eating crushed emeralds, eating rotten honey or treacle and washing the sick person in human urine and human feces

Very soon after the Black Death came to Europe graveyards became full there were no people left to consecrate the dead, this resulted in many people being buried in the same grave.

The Christians perspective of the Black Death is that they believed that the Jews started spreading the disease around. This was because, in Middle Ages Christians thought that Jews were associated with the devil and were out to eliminate Christianity. When the Black Death hit Europe, for a Christian population who had already accused Jews of poisoning wells, they also would have assumed that they also brought the Black Death plague.

Historian's Perspective of the Black Death

The historian's perspective of the Black Death is that the plague originated in China and then believed to have spread to Europe. The Black Death was believed to be spread through fleas on rats but, researchers say that it could be from a whole different cause. In new study from researchers in the University of Oslo, they analyzed the climate data and the weather conditions going way back to the 14th century. The outbreaks of the Black Death seemed to be with weather patterns in Asia, not Europe itself. But, from the climate data, the outbreak of the plague in Europe can be connected to the years central Asia experienced wet springs and then followed by summer, which wouldn't have been a good climate for black rats. It would of created ideal breeding conditions for another plague causing rodent called the gerbil. The gerbil (also known as giant gerbils) can grow to about 15-20cm in body length as an adult. The researchers believe that after such ideal weather conditions caused an explosion in the Asian gerbil population, gerbils bearing fleas infected with the plague bacteria (Yersinia) made their way made their way to Europe along bustling Silk Road trade routes.

The three forms of plague were: the bubonic plague, the septicemic plague, and pneumonic plague. The Bubonic form is the most common and its sign was the formation of buboes, greatly swollen lymph nodes, usually under the arm or in the groin area. The formation of buboes was normally followed by fever, chills, and general muscle aches. Internal bleeding in the later stages formed the black spots/boils under the skin. Another symptom was the very horrible and foul smell of all body fluids.

The event that historians think sparked the Black Death in Europe was the Mongols trying to capture the town of Caffa. The Mongols who were infected with the Black Death sieged and flung the bodies of their dead (who were infected with the Black Death) over the cities walls. Caffa was a stopping point for traders and merchants so when the sickness came to Caffa those traders and merchants hopped on their boats and fled to Sicily. Sicily was then infected with the Black Death which then spread to the rest of Italy and quite quickly to the rest of Europe.

The impact for peasants during the Black Death called the "Peasants' Revolt" was an attempt by the peasants to maintain the better conditions they gained from the depopulation from the plague. People in earlier times who would of never been able to buy and work their own land could now afford to do so. As the consequence, peasants and serfs were no longer willing to work the lord's lands at harvest time and take the produce to sell at the town to market for him. The plague killed the seacoasts from Southampton and came to Bristol, and when it came there, almost the whole town died as a sudden death.

If you were living in a bigger town or city, you would have a bigger risk on getting the plague, but, even if you had a small village, there would probably still be a chance of getting the plague because it would spread across from human to human and animal to animal, spreading the disease through towns and cities, big and small. Even if people ran away to save themselves but, they would either be turned away from other villages because they could be infecting that village with the plague or, they died while trying to make it to other villages.

After the Black Death came to Italy through Sicily it spread to the rest of Italy fairly quickly. Certain cities in Tuscany including its capital Florence large pits were dug near the church for those who died during the night, in the morning the pits were almost full and a thin layer of dirt was put on top of the bodies and then it was ready for the next layer of dead people. A Florentine writer described it as "lasagne with layers of pasta and cheese".
