Throughout EDS 309, I have learned not only that the environment is in trouble in our community, but worldwide. There needs to be a COLLECTIVE effort by all countries if we want to alleviate the damage that we have already ensued on our planet. The air pollutants that we are emitting currently are adding to the Greenhouse Gas Layer and it's creating climate change, a serious issue. Many negative impacts we are contributing as a country is also leading to negative impacts on other countries.

Waste is a serious issue across the World. If we want to better ourselves and the World. Multiple actions have to be taken place. Waste issues are not one country's fault. For example, the Pacific Garbage Patch is a huge patch of plastic and debris found in the North Pacific Ocean. This is a result of multiple countries dumping waste into the ocean that has formed this. The world has also worked together to create efforts to clean up the Pacific Garbage Patch, such as the tug boats that go through the water catching plastics from the area in an effort to clean it out of the ocean.

Pollution in our air and water has been out of hand for the longest time. Industrial plants have produced PFAS that has invaded our groundwater wells and has gotten into our water. This has happened in multiple areas around the globe, and even hit close to La Crosse when the airport had a fire. The foam in the fire retardant seeped into the ground wells and got into a number of home's drinking water on French Island. If we take a worldwide approach with this, and work to regulate these chemicals, we can improve our water quality. The UN has the GEMS/Water programme, which is one of the many efforts the globe is taking to lower our water pollution.

It's not secret that air pollution is an ongoing issue in our society. Lot's of it comes from our emission of Greenhouse gases (Methane, Water Vapor, CO2) from fossil fuels. Our largest emissions come from everyday things like gas/diesel powered vehicles, factories, and other fossil fuel using products.

Improving our Air Pollution

Air Pollution can be improved multiple ways, but it's a worldwide effort that needs to be stressed to the students. Touching on regulations like the Clean Air Act of 1970 is a good example of how the world is working together to regulate emissions harmful to our environment. Stressing to students what they can do to help is important as well, such as commenting to school, work, or school/athletic events and practices. Switching to electric cars is another great way to help play your part in reducing air pollution as well. Stressing to students the importance of playing your part collectively is something that I have really learned in this class.

How do we teach this to our students and apply it to our lesson?

As a teacher, applying this lesson should be included in global education and environmental units. When talking about global education, environmental action is important to bring up because it is a worldwide approach. Our problems are not condensed to the United States, but around the world as we do share one globe. However, to make students relate to the issue, I would talk about local emissions that are a current issue and how that can affect the globe, such as a local industrial plant, incinerator, landfill, etc. It also can be incorporated with learning about energy sources as well, as that's how I learned a lot about the subject in my GEO 200 class. A way to bring it up outside of the classroom is asking students to calculate their geological footprint, in exchange for small prizes. Just making them aware of what their footprint is can be a way to spark a student interest in trying to help the environment. My goal is to try and create student action within my classroom, even if it's as much as using a reusable water bottle. At least I know I have at least gotten attention if I can get the simplest of action.

How can myself as a teacher improve and practice what I preach to my students

I think practicing what I preach is very important, and to start, I think it's reducing my fossil fuel consumption is the first practice that I can improve on. I do a lot of driving for my hobby outside of teaching, and lowering the amount I travel can help. Things like recycling and reusing just a simple water bottle are also things I can do to improve my Ecological Footprint. I want to advocate for global improvement by also holding fundraising events at schools events like football and basketball games, in which these funds can be donated to efforts to help clean our water, or help provide efforts to less-developed countries for sustainability.

How has EDS 309 help me grow and learn about Environmental Action?

EDS 309 has been a class about how we teach global Perspectives in no matter what we teach, from math and science to social studies and English. So when I started to learn about Environmental action in my other class, it correlated directly with EDS 309 as it helped me even take a global approach from the subject. For instance, we talked about transportation and carpooling, and how the installation of the interstate highway system encouraged fossil fuel consumption. While that is true, there are plenty of other highways in the World that have a similar highway system to our interstates, with freeways and high fossil fuel consumption. At the same time however, it also allows us to look at what other countries are doing much better than us, such as more electric vehicles and mass bus transportation systems that lower fossil fuel consumption. Because of how I have been able to grow from learning about how we can teach global perspectives, that will help me in the classroom when I teach about how Environmental Action is a global topic and we need to approach everything, from problems to solutions, from a worldwide standpoint.

You can always be an "expert" on any given topic, however there are always questions you can ask about the topic. One question I would have about the topic is what are the future plans the UN has in store for the globe to work together on this? The United States has passed the Clean Air and Water acts that have helped us become much more sustainable, can be work together as a globe to pass similar ones? My last question is what the future holds for accountability in pollution. If one country stops polluting let's say the Pacific Garbage patch, but others continue and it affects that said country, how does that impact foreign relationships?
