Esperanza is jealous of the kids who get to stay at school for lunch and eat in the canteen instead of going home since their mothers aren’t there or their house is too far away. She begs her mom to write her a note so she can stay at school and eat, but when she goes to get in the canteen, one of the nuns stop her and sends her to Sister Superior to get the note confirmed. Sister Superior then scoffs at the note and tells Esperanza that her house is only a couple blocks away and makes her go to the window and point to her house. Sister Superior thinks that she pointed to a different, ugly house and Esperanza started to cry so she let her eat in the canteen for one day. Esperanza then went and ate her lunch in the canteen while crying with everyone looking at her.

Significance

The significance of this is that Esperanza tried so hard not to eat at home. Even though she didn’t live that far. It shows how much she really wanted to fit in with the other kids. Also it showed how Esperanza wanted to feel appreciated when she got home, so her solution to that would be to stay at school longer so that when she got home her family would be happier to see her.

Theme

A theme we see occurring throughout the vignette is the desire to fit in and the acceptance of young kids by society. Esperanza craves the feeling of being special and being part of the group of kids who eat in the canteen. However, she learns that following what the other kids do doesn't lead to becoming unique.

Imagery is seen throughout this vignette and quote when describing the traits of Esperanza’s house. Cisneros describes Esperanza’s “house” as ugly and unappealing, even to less privileged people. This imagery allows the reader to picture the scene, which creates empathy from the reader because of the imagery of what Esperanza is going through.

The Sister Superior assumes that Esperanza lives in a poor home and is describing the stereotype that she pairs with Esperanza. The nun is comparing Esperanza to the wealthier kids at her school, expressing the social divide that Esperanza is unlucky to experience. Esperanza’s feelings of shame cause her to agree to this accusation, as she struggles with gaining confidence and overcoming her embarrassment.
