This image captures exactly what Phil Ochs is saying, the images makes you feel for everyone who knew someone who was sent off to fight in Vietnam. Fight for what? The message of the song is that Americans should not be a part of this war. During the time of the Vietnam war, not everyone had jobs. Many were deliberately trying to avoid being sent to Vietnam. The individuals who had jobs were being sent to war, but the rich, the leaders, and the educated were not. The people in poverty were the ones who had to fight. During the Vietnam war, President Johnson and the government were lying to the American citizens about the  scale of the war. As the leaders would say, they were "protecting the society". The citizens were being told the war has been successful so far and progress was being made. The citizens found out through media that none of the population was safe and nothing was under control.
