1. What are the benefits of the geneticaly modified organism you chose? GloFish - It was modified to provide a warning system for pollution. Then, because of all the pretty colors, people wanted them as pets. This can generate interest in those who want to research or even study modification in fish. Another benefit is that detecting polluted water can save someone or something from getting sick if they drank polluted water or used it to cook.

2. What are the concerns of the genetically modified organism? The GloFish are vulnerable to predators because they were altered from zebrafish so they could glow to detect pollution, but they are more visible to other fish that look for them to eat. Also, they could disrupt the natural environment of the zebra fish and alter the natural environment in a negative way.

3. Using one piece of evidence, do you think the benefits outweigh the concerns of the genetic modification? I think the benefits do not outweigh the concerns. The fish are now threatened when they are in the wild because of the modification,, they can't hide. And the benefit is they could be a pet and detect pollution. Being a pet is not better than being threatened in an environment and the pollution issue can be detected in other ways. Also, according to the Center for Food Safety, they are worried the fish will make it into the wild and disrupt natural biodiversity.

I chose to research GloFish. I found that there are some benefits and some concerns regarding this GMO. Some benefits would be their pretty glowing scales. Their glow makes them optimal pets. However, there are also some concerns regarding the GloFish. Certain people are concerned about GloFish becoming an invasive species if they were to escape into the wild. Others are concerned that GloFish are harmed when they are genetically modified, although it has been confirmed that the process is not harmful in any way. I believe that GloFish make beautiful pets. However, we should make sure that these fish are not released into the wild.

1. Why do scientists genetically modify plants or animals? Scientists do this to make the modified living organisms "better". For example the GloFish, this fish tells if water is polluted, the fish cannot be eaten therefore cannot be released into the wild.

2. I think that genetic mutations in living is not too healthy, for one thing insects could somehow mutate by eating a genetically modified plant for example somehow this insect grows and carries new diseases that hurt humans.

Genetically modified corn or super corn has pros and cons in this development. The good things about super corn is that it allows humans to have more repetitive and successful farm harvests, the farmers don’t need to use as many pesticides because these plants have a poison in it that kills insects but is harmless to people. These are all grate and all but with good production comes big business, and companies are going to make the corn more expensive to bring in more pay and make them more powerful. Another problem is that there are going to be farmers that don’t want to use super corn so if super corn seeds float on the wind and might get in others farms which might not be grate when the plants start to grow and act with the super corn. In all this debate on super corn can be good and bad for the pros are strictly tied to the cons. This is how I see this debate on GMO corn.

What are the benefits of the genetically modified organism you chose?(GOLDFISH AND GMO) Genetically modified organisms are living organisms that have been altered through genetic engineering. One of the most famous examples of a GMO is the GMO goldfish, which has been created by scientists to produce more vibrant colors and shapes. These goldfish are becoming increasingly popular among aquarium owners due to their unique characteristics he use of GMOs in goldfish breeding raises many ethical questions since these fish may not be able to survive in the wild due to their modified genetics. Furthermore, some people worry about the effect that these fish could have on other species in an aquarium if they were released into natural waters. Despite this, many people find the vibrant colors and shapes created by GMO goldfish to be aesthetically pleasing and continue to breed them.

GloFish were originally produced to provide a warning system for pollution. But with the addition of further colors, it became obvious that they would be popular pets. Because these fish are popular pets, more people are becoming interested in owning fish. One of the concerns of GloFish is that they are so bright, they are more likely to be eaten by predators in the wild. I think that the benefits will outweigh the concerns because the GloFish is not commonly found in the wild, so it won't have to be worried about predators.

Positives would be they dont harm the enviornemnt and can detect pollution which helps us see tell how to use water in places. Some concerns are that they will make it into the wild and disturb naturual habitats since they breed easily. I think the Positives outweighs our concerns because as long as we keep them contained properly we can prevent the negative effects.

Pros and Cons of GMO Crops. GMO crops are used in many different ways. In the beginning, humans just used pesticides for plants, but it would either: 1. Harm the pollinators, 2. Harm the farm worker, and 3. Harm the plant itself. GMOs can be used to create ways so the plants would become invincible to pesticides. It would also help plants survive in harsh conditions like drought, floods, early snow... etc. It could also help the climate. Some Cons, big industries can use GMOs to become rich, not caring whether or not it would help or harm the human population. I think that we should still use GMOs. It could help the running out food problem.

In the early 1900's, Papaya was Hawaii's 2nd largest crop, with a revenue of roughly $17-million dollars. From the 1960's to 1997, the crop fell to almost 40% production due to a virus called the papaya ringspot virus disease. Not only did Hawaii lose hundreds of thousands of pounds of fruit per year for natives to eat due to this virus, but farmers were struggling to survive due to failed crops and lost revenue. A genetic modification making papaya resistant to the virus, called rainbow papaya, has restored the papaya industry in Hawaii and now makes up 90% of the papaya grown across the world.

A concern of rainbow papaya is that it is destroying nearby organic and non-GMO papaya due to cross pollination. Those who oppose GMOs fear that these crops will be destroyed before we know all of the negative effects of rainbow papaya. They also criticize the GMO for creating a surplus and driving the price of papaya down.

While I do think the concerns of organic and non-GMO farmers are valid, had it not been for the rainbow papaya, the crop could have been wiped out entirely and many farmers would have faced loss of business over the years and eventually poverty. There have not been any health issues linked to the GMO papaya at this time, so I feel that the benefit of being virus resistant and allowing the crop to be plentiful far outweigh the concerns presented.

At first GloFish were made to be a warning sign for pollution, but after more colors for these fish became available they became highly popular pets. Even though so many people love their bright colors, the issue of their health and survival in the wild became a great concern. Eventually it was proven that these fish are not harmed by genetic modification and can live healthy lives. In the wild though they are more likely to be attacked by predators because of their glowing scales. I think that the benefits outweigh the concerns because many GloFish are just pets and aren’t in any predatory situations that would threaten their species.

There are some concerns about them ruining natural habitats because they breed easily. In my opinion, I don't think they will overrun habitats because since they glow, predators can see them easily.

I have decided to research the GloFish for this discussion. This GMO has quite a few concerns and benefits, so I will break them down here. Some of the benefits include being very colorful, which attracts popularity for purchase, making those selling the fish wealthier. However, there are also many concerns with the GloFish, such as it becoming an invasive species if accessing the ocean. Another being the process of Genetic Modification being ethical, which hasn't been proven yet. As well as that, it is considered illegal to breed them, so given that information, scientists may be concerned with GloFish that are bred and what the color the offspring may be. In my opinion, the benefits do not outweigh the concerns, because the GloFish becoming an invasive species would be a very major outcome to something that was once made for the purpose of detecting pollution.

How is the GloFish a GMO? The Glofish is a GMO by using genes. snatched from other organisms What is a trasngenic line and how is it used to make the GloFish?
