Online banking has come a long way and we're transitioning into an online world where at some point in the future virtually all consumer banking will be done online.

But what type of impact might this have on today's financial institutes and what roles do online banks play currently?
This "padlet" will go in depth in the various concepts of online banking and the impact it has on not only financial institutes but also ourselves. We'll be talking about the past, present & future of banks and online banking specifically.

The introduction Video

- This is simply an introduction video to explain to those who may be unfamiliar with online banking some of the simple concepts and how it can save money and time with how easy it is to use. There are various basic online banking benefits/tutorial videos however Canada is just really getting into the game the past couple years and so I chose this CIBC tutorial just due to its positive thoughts about online banking. What they don't touch on however is how it impacts the big financial institutes today such as themselves. However some are competing by creating their own online bank service such as Tangerine by ScotiaBank, CIBC has online banking but it's main focus is still its financial institutes where as ScotiaBank has a "side project" for online banking, although it still takes a toll and with the way our generation is headed eventually online banks push physical financial institutes out of the loop. But where does that money get stored if theres no physical banks? Thats where E-Money will come in.

Speaking of E-Money, virtual currency or "E-Money" is growing at a substantial rate and online banking incorporates this as it is much easier to use virtual money than it is to use physical money. It's faster as it can be simply stored and transferred through online services and even your phone. Company's such as paypal and credit card companies are all competing for the top spot of online money transfers but it's actually the infamous "Bit-Coin" that is the reigning champ with it being completely a 100% turn over profit and it's only a matter of time before it takes over physical cash. I chose this image as it showcases various common icons for "E-Money" that are becoming so common today.

Canada Online Banking Survey (2015)

The title it'self grabbed my eye and then the fact that it backed up my theories and how popular online banking is becoming with 46% of Canadians saying they prefer to bank online than at their local branch and online banking makes it's debut at #1 as the top reason to stay with their bank appose to switching to a different bank. This article also talks about a survey they conducted with millennials and what they want to see from their bank and also how they can improve online banking due to the fact that they are the primary users of online banking and the future of it too. The other reason I chose this article is because I wanted to relate it to another article i'll be talking about in this padlet to show the difference in just 2 years how much online banking has been surging and the massive growth in technology and online banking over just a short period of time

Canada Online Banking : Update (2017)

Canadian Bankers Association //http://www.cba.ca/technology-and-banking // (Written on March 1st, 2017, by the CBA)
In the above post "Canada Online Banking Survey"^ I talked about a survey conducted in 2015, The reason being was to use this next article to show the advancements in technology and the overtake of online banking in such a short period of time. We jumped from what was nearly half of users preferring online banking to three quarters in just 2 years time. That is a substantial growth to me and this article explains some of the facts behind it. With mobile banking coming into play and new technology being invented all the time such as the new "Tap to Pay" many people are turning to online banking as it's simply easier and more convenient and hassle free. This article also breaks down the age groups of people in the survey, which I found rather interesting because it found that a majority of people who prefer banking at a branch are 55 years of age or older, thus showing how millennials prefer to bank online and soon that will simply be the premier method. If the growth of people who prefer online banking to banking at financial institutes/branches can grow by 25% in just two years, with upcoming technology, we could see almost everything being done with online banking .

The reason I chose this image was for the comedic effect and as it shows online banking can be done anywhere (Provided you have access to the internet) such as this guy in the middle of the water . Online banking has many benefits for both customers and the banks themselves.
- It's environmentally friendly, saving a lot of wasted paper.
- It saves both you and the bank time and money
- You have 24/7 access while the banks don't need to be open
- It's always protected as the banks spend a lot of time and money into security of accounts.
- You get mobile access from your phone
- All of this means less work for banks as it has all been simplified online for consumers to easily access.
- Many banks have also come out with new video services to help customers online so you have 24/7 support.
Really online banking has made it so there's almost no need to go into the bank as it can even generate rates on mortgages and other loans for you to guarantee you the absolute best price.
Online banking has made it easier on not only yourself but their very own financial institutes by utilizing online banking and essentially making you do all the work without even realizing it, it's that simple.

Making Money from Online Banks?

So here's something a little different. I chose this video as it is sort of a promo video, I say sort of because it was made by just an average customer but he is promoting the Online bank in Canada called Tangerine. So basically to give you the run down of this long video , Back in the first month of 2017 Tangerine was running a promo where if you signed up for one of their accounts (They have many free ones) you would receive 50$. Thats it. That's all. Pretty good deal right? Well this guy was even smarter as when you do this they give you a "Referral Code" and if a friend signs up through that link/referral, you would then receive another 50$. Now I don't know how many people signed up through his code but this guy was smart about it and I liked his method of thinking and that's a good reason I chose this video. It was difficult to find online banking videos that weren't just " "Financial Institutes Name" Tutorial/Guide" and so this was one of the few differen't ones and it showed online banking and how it can not only save you money but also make you money.

I included this video to show just how far online and mobile banking has come. This shows one of the newest technological advancements in mobile banking with "Tap Pay" which most new phones have included in their phone which allows you to use your mobile banking app to tap and pay without even having your debit/credit card or cash on you, all you need is that phone that never leaves your pocket! Online banking has come a long way in technological advancements where it started out as just simply paying your bills online to now being able to tap and pay with your phone and even send money over iMessage which is another new feature started by ScotiaBank that allows you to send money over a message for the fastest money transfer possible. I chose this video as it was one of very few videos that actually showcased a new technological advancement in mobile banking as well as it did it in a fun way.

This picture is sort of self explanatory and is just there to give you some insight as to how online banking is used. This picture is from Forbes so these are probably american stats and is also from 2015 however Canada and the USA are pretty comparable and how much physical cheques and money orders has decreased due to the fact that online banking allows to you do all of that much more simply now. I found this rather interesting as it even shows the difference in phone users as to who uses their phone more and more for banking such as the little stat below saying IOS users use their phone 4x more in a day than Android users

I really liked this article because it shows the bank working as a team and even the young millennials as it states they get together every morning in a circle and brainstorm recent ideas and projects. Not only is this a great way to start their day and could one day lead to "The next big thing" they also provide them with lounge areas, coffee, snacks and more to make them enjoy the working environment and want to work harder. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this article and found it very interesting how working in a bank office would be such an interesting job. Also as a stats guy i found it very interesting where it states that 68% and 31% of Canadians use online banking and mobile banking each week respectively, where as only a low 16% actually visit their branch weekly.
