DNA contains 4 bases. Those bases, or Nucleotides are Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, and Guanine. Adenine pairs with Thymine, and Cytosine pairs with Guanine. The backbone of the DNA is on the sides of it. The backbone is made of a special sugar called Sugar Phosphate. DNA is also in a double-helix shape. The double-helix shape helps the DNA be stable.

Friedrich Miescher was a scientist who researched white blood cells. In 1869, he made a big discovery. He found a new molecule in the blood cells nuclei that he called “nuclein.” Nuclein is made out of oxygen and hydrogen. It turns out, Nuclein was DNA. His work is important because he helped scientists discover what DNA was made out of.

Rosalind Franklin was a chemist that was studying DNA. She was trying to figure out the structure of it. She calculated where each atom was on a picture of DNA and came to the conclusion in 1953 that DNA was in a double-helix shape. She was the one who truly discovered the structure of DNA even though she didn't get as much credit as she deserved. Her work is important, because it helped scientists figure out what shape DNA was in so that they could research further into DNA.

James Watson, Francis Crick And The Discovery Of DNA (1953)

James Watson and Francis Crick were scientists who studied DNA. They both, just like Rosalind, were trying to decode DNA's structure. They studied DNA with each other, and they both tried to discover its structure. They took a picture of DNA from Rosalind and they both studied it trying to find its structure. From careful examinations, they eventually found out that DNA was in a double-helix shape. Their work is important, because then scientists can find out how DNA is stable because of its structure, and possibly use that structure in other things for a possible advantage.
