The French Revolution started off with the estates general. This was the social hierarchy for France. This type of government was broken into 3 groups: Clergy/Church, Nobles, and Commoners. Each group had one vote, not even considering the population of each group. This caused the 3rd estate to get angry, because votes would always be against their favor since both 1st and 2nd estate always got what they wanted because they had money. Eventually, the National Assembly was created to bring each of the estate's concern to consideration. Of course, the 3rd estate got left out because they were always in a disagreement. So, all the 3rd estate members gathered at a nearby tennis court. They took an oath to not disband, until a constitution was signed for equality. The king's response to his was to let the 3rd estate back into the national assembly to avoid any other conflict.

The storming of the Bastille happened in July of 1789. The commoners/3rd estate felt that they were being attacked by King Louis XVI. They freed political prisoners as a result by rising up against the soldiers, and the soldiers let them because they were also part of the 3rd estate. Then, there was the march on the Palace of Versailles. Women marched because the price of bread was too high, and a rumor went around that Queen Marie Antoinette was hoarding all of the wheat and bread. They also were angry that the Queen was spending all the tax money on herself, and not using it on the country. Robespierre leads France into their 3rd form of government, the first republic. Essentially, it was for the people and the government, giving people a say in what the government does. He also began the Reign of Terror, executing anyone that was against the revolution or the government. Robespierre ended up killing 70,000 people over these years. He became a dictator, abused his power, and was overthrown and killed, ending the Reign of Terror.

The directory consists of an upper house and lower house. The lower house comes up with ideas for laws, and sends the to the upper house for approval to pass the law. Napoleon takes over and overthrows this government. Napoleon wrote a code, which made men have more rights and completely stripped women of their rights. He reinforced slavery as well. He officially eliminated the estate system, allowed freedom of religion, improved education and relationship with the Pope, and more. These all improved France and allow them to become an incredibly strong country. Napoleon made well known, taking over much of Europe. He also made his brother the king of Spain. His death also brought a spike in nationalism. This is people feeling incredibly proud of their own country. They say that their country has never done anything wrong and will never be in the wrong.
