XXL Freshman 2016

In the genre of Hip Hop, every year, the magazine/site XXL releases an XXL Freshman list who classify as that years 'Next Big Artists' or, typically new artists are given a platform which reaches all areas of rap and hip hop. The 2016 XXL Freshman list was arguably the most impactful and generational Freshman list as it showed the evolution of rap and the direction it was going in. The Freshman cover featured artists who had received a lot of flack due to their 'mumble-style' of rap such as; Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage and Lil Yachty to name a few. More notably, as part of the XXL Freshman list, artists perform a cypher (freestyle) together over the same beat. This cypher was credited with initial negative reviews due to this new sound/wave of rap. However, stood the test of time to now be considered one of the most influential and evolutionary Freshman lists in XXL history as all of the artists in this cypher have gone on to become superstars.

Uzi collaborated with the rap group Migos in October 2016 on the single "Bad and Boujee" which in January 2017 reached number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming Uzi Vert's first number 1 single as a featured artist, and his highest charting single. On February 27, 2017, Woods released the EP Luv Is Rage 1.5 whilst on tour with The Weeknd. The EP was positively received for its "nerdy" nature with Kingdom Hearts themed instrumentals and lyrics referring to anime, Steven Universe and hentai. The EP was also credited as the start of Woods' affiliation with the "emo-rapper" label due to the heartbreak-associated lyrics on the song "Luv Scars K.o 1600" and references to threats of suicide and depression on the stand-out track "XO Tour Llif3". https://populartimelines.com/timeline/Lil-Uzi-Vert

Lil Uzi Vert is very much into his fashion, often wearing womens clothing and accessories which changes the masculine norm slightly. Images of Uzi wearing skirts and carrying handbags became the subject of trolls who would label Uzi as a woman and label his sexuality which was false, as Lil Uzi Vert has expressed that he is straight through his music. Along with his music being around his love and breakup with former girlfriend, Britney Murphy who is featured on 4 of Uzi's mixtape projects.
While Uzi is rather flamboyant for a genre of music which is polarised by 'masculine thugs', he has probably gained more as its more publicity around his name.

Uzi's appearance is hardly ordinary. While face tattoos and dreads have become the norm in rap, Uzi has his entire face covered in tattoos, while he adorns different coloured hair every other month.. This is referenced in his song 'Banned from TV' on his Mixtape Luv is Rage (2015), 'I tat my face, I dye my hair and let it lock up, yeah'.
Uzi's appearance is relatively normal in the rap industry, therefore it would suggest that he wants to be perceived as different, however it also places him into a group of rappers.

Uzi's sophomore album Eternal Atake has been teased since July 17th, 2018. The title is in reference to the mass suicide of the cult group Eternal Atake. It has been a rocky road since the teasing of the album, after countless delays, Uzi announcing his retirement in early 2019 and before releasing singles 'Thats a Rack' and 'Sanguine Paradise'. Though the countless delays of the project; Uzi had teased the album for long enough which began to create a buzz from his core fanbase (including me).
However, as Uzi released his hit 'Futsal Shuffle 2020' in the December of 2019 which went along with a dance challenge, it was safe to assume that this was the beginning of the marketing and that Eternal Atake was close to release.
Uzi then began to use social media much more. By responding to fans on twitter and completely clearing his instagram feed so that there was no pictures, for him to then release pictures related to the theme of the project.
Uzi then announced the release date for Eternal Atake on 13/03/20. He released a short film on YouTube which was marketing for the album and featured snippets of his songs and shortly after, released the album a whole week earlier which caught many by surprise (I can vouch for the surprise because I was overwhelmed with both happiness and excitement).

This was the best selling week for an album for any artist since 2018 and the fourth best selling week for any artist ever. "Every song on the album besides “Futsal Shuffle 2020” (which appears as a bonus track) debuted in the Top 20 on U.S. Spotify; “Baby Pluto” topped the stateside streaming chart with 3.364 million plays and debuted at No. 6 on the global chart with 4.691 million streams."

Uzi then revealed that he had a Deluxe Version of the album, asked fans on Twitter what songs they wanted (as many of Uzi's song snippets had leaked online throughout the years), and released another album within Eternal Atake. This album is called Lil Uzi VS The World 2 which dons similarly, the same artwork as its mixtape predecessor Lil Uzi VS The World which released in 2016.
