As the police officer states in the song there is no one to help him because everyone is off to war. He states that towns are near empty and the ones left are struggling when they need workers in restaurants or at home. In her song I think it is a mixture of talking about African American rights and the Vietnam War. Even though this is a post Vietnam War song there are many lyrics that associate with it. The lyrics include “ there ain't nothing a mother can do when her baby is gone”, “stands for freedom in a foreign land”. I believe that the first quote is referring to when a mother loses her child to the draft because there is nothing that they can do but pray. The song lyrics are about 9 lines long with no more than 7 words in each line. The song tells a story about  a boy waking up to the bright sunshine to what he thinks will be a good day. He gets a letter and realizes that he is going to war. He questions himself to see if he really wants to or not. Aretha Franklin talks mostly about missing her husband and that she has to be strong without him. She says on his day of leave she was devastated because he also divorced her the same day he left for war. She states that she was the weak link in the beginning and she had to change but it took her many months to get over the drastic change in her life. In every song there are lyrics that reference either the draft, going to war, missing their family, or the idea that fighting does not truly help the world. For example in the song “Draft Morning” by The Byrds and in Marvin Gaye’s song “What’s Going On” they both reference draft day and what will come of the future after the war. For them what came after the future is the true unknown. All of these lyricists and/or songwriters had one thing in mind. They wanted to give the people hope. Many people did not think that we would make it out of the Vietnam War or if the family members that were sent to the war may never come back.
