Cliche-verre is a ninteenteen centery technique that involves covering a sheet of glass with ink or soot and drawing a picture on the clouded side. After this you then apply it to a photo-sensitive paper and expose it to light. This technique is cheap and very effective.

what I did:

I got my piece of glass and some ink. I then got a paint brush/ roller and started to paint on one side of the glass with the ink.
After i had done this i got a picture which i wanted to draw onto the ink and used scissors (thin ones) and started drawing on the ink sided piece of glass.
However, i came across some problems. I did not allow the ink to dry before i started to scartch my picture onto the glass. This made it very difficult to see what the picture was and also there was alot of rub marks from where i leaned on the glass.
I had to start again, so i scratched off the ink and made the glass clean and ready to use again.
after, i let the ink to dry before starting to scartch a picture. This was a better outcome.
When i had finished i took my glass down to the dark room and got some photo sensitive paper (as the glass can be used as a negative. I put it into a contact frame and did a test strip. I found that two seconds was not enough, so i went onto 4, 6,8, 10. I found that 8-10seconds had a better outcome.
After doing this i exposed my final image and developed, stopped and fixed.
The outcome was a success!

I should of let the ink dry before drawing my picture onto the glass.

I could have used a paint roller instead of a paint brush as this left brush strokes on the glass and was visible.

drawn a better picture as i rushed it (i have to patient) as i would have got a better image and outcome.

wore gloves as i got ink all over my hands and body (i should have worn old clothes.

1) take a blot of ink and roll it onto your glass (i suggest using a roller as a paint brush leaves marks)

2) Draw onto your glass, there are many different ways you can do this. You can rub, scratch, blot, etc take your time to expierement! you can always start over.

3) Once you are satistified with your drawing you can now use it as a format-negative and take it to the dark room. Use the enlarger and the photo-sensitive paper to do this final step. You have to do a test strip before you start on your final image.

4) Develope, stop bath and fix. Then let it to dry naturally! You now have done your final image!
