Often the shadow self is that aspect of us that is shaped by negative events and emotions. When we come to identify too strongly with the shadow, we allow our negative emotions to control and effect our behaviors in an unbalanced way. 
Shadow work allows us to confront the darkest parts of ourselves and make peace with them, to understand and accept them so that we can work with our darkness and use it, rather than be controlled by it.
