In The Things They Carried, O'Brien tells the audience that even if they witness something with their own eyes, they can never get the full truth to what happened, "It's difficult to separate what happened from what seems to happen", you can blink and miss something important but you wouldn't know that you missed it so your truth can be different from someone who witnessed the same thing.

I feel that the group is missing a large emotional aspect of this discussion so far. Human behavior is not driven by past experiences alone, it is driven by the emotional growth ocurring from these events. And at the core of every struggle in the books we have read is the innate desire to be loved. The need for love of any kind from another is what has driven each character to act in morally questionable ways every time. The creature from Frankenstein is the most glaring example of this in its desperate vying for Victor's slightest affection that eventually pushes him off the brink. Fences has a similar struggling paternal bond between Corey and Troy in which Troy acts as a sort of father figure with questionable methods. The Things They Carried exhibited that need to be loved as the soldiers went off to battle instead of draft dodging, which they felt was right, in order to avoid losing the love of their families. Macbeth does everything he does to please Lady Macbeth at first, and only after does he consider his own wants. Every story is just the same.
