In this scene, Papa heard gunfire while digging trenches for the Nazis and soon discovered that the people he had just been working with minutes ago had just been murdered by Nazi guards. I wonder how someone could ever be so heartless toward other human beings. This scene is significant to the story because it was the first time that the citizens of Żarki were introduced to the fear tactics used to scare them.

In this scene, Micheal and his family arrive in Aushwitz after a long, inhumane ride in a boxcar. Micheal describes what his first impression was of Aushwitz and what he first saw when he arrived. This scene made me wonder why the Nazis believed that these horrific actions were acceptable. This scene is significant because it sets the tone for the rest of Micheal’s stay at Aushwitz.

After learning that her husband and son had been killed in the gas chambers, Mamishu broke down crying on the ground not worrying if the guards would kill her or not. She later realized that she needed to stay alive and protect her other son, Micheal. With this motivation, Mamishu continued to fight for thier lives and kept pushing though this hard time. This scene makes me wonder if I could find the strength to get back up and keep fighting. This scene is significant because if it wasn’t for the motivation of her son, Mamishu would have died and Micheal wouldn’t have survived on his own.

After being separated during the liberation of Aushwitz, Micheal and Mamishu reunite. Mamishu is writing on a carriage through the town square and recongnizes a familiar face, Micheal, in the crowd. Micheal wants to believe that the woman is Mamishu, but after mistaking another woman for his mother, Micheal doesn’t wasn’t to jump to conclusions. I wonder if anyone else in his family could possibly be alive. This scene is significant because thier whole family’s life will improve.

While eating their sabbath dinner, Micheal’s family hears a knock on the door. After hearing about Christians coming to Jews houses and attacking Holocaust survivors, the family hides thier belongings and pretends to be a Christian family. Micheal’s Aunt Hilda lies to the barbaric men and backs up their lie by having Ruth recite her prayers to them. This passage makes me wonder if I could find the courage to lie someone who has the power to kill me. This scene is significant because the lie that they told saved the lives of their family members.

After politely asking Officer Schmitt to reassign the police gaurds, Schmitt puts a gun to Israel’s head threatening to kill him if he ever interrupts him again. This passage is significant because it is Israel’s first near death expierence that tested his ability to stay calm. I wonder if I could remain calm if I was put in this situation.

In this scene, Micheal tells his readers about where his grandparents were deported to and how his grandfather passed away on the way to the camp. His grandmother supposedly survived the ride there but hasn’t been seen since. I wonder how hard it must have been to be in a muggy boxcar for days. I wonder if I would have survived that long on the way to Treblinka.

Micheals mother, Mamishu, heard crying and went to find out what had happened. She hid behind a tree and watched as a young family of three was forced to strip from their clothes and dig their own grave. The solder made them stand close together and shot them. Mamishu was horrified, but what scared her most was the evil smile on the soldiers face after he had killed the family. I wonder how someone could find such evil pleasure in killing an innocent family. I wonder if I could have stayed calm while witnessing this horrifying murder.

The morning after liberation, Micheal and Bobishi had received new clothing and shoes from the Kanada warehouse, where the Nazi gaurds collected prisoners’ belongings and sorted it. I wonder how nice it would feel to receive new shoes and clothes after being neglected like that for so long. I wonder if I could trust the soldiers that were trying to help Micheal and Bobishi.

While Micheal was being treated in the infirmary for his illness, American soldiers had liberated the concentration camp he had been staying in. They offered Micheal and Bobishi cookies and asked for their names. They had been freed. I wonder if I could have trusted the soldiers who were coaxing them with cookies. This scene is significant to the story because if they hadn’t been liberated, Micheal and Bobishi might not have survived.
